Favorite little-known Author

I have some favorite authors that no one else seems to have ever heard of. Do you? If so, who are they and what have they written? And why do you like them?

A recent favorite if mine is Anne Elizabeth Stengl. She has written a fantasy series called Tales of Goldstone Wood. Each book can be read individually but there are elements in each one that tie the books together. I love the different characters she writes.

It seems like a lot of people have never heard of Catherynne M. Valente and that's a shame, because she's amazing, definitely one of my favorite modern authors. She writes gorgeous myth-inspired fantasy and her work has this rare dreamlike, natural, fairytale quality - it doesn't seem forced or tacky like a lot of books I've read in similar genres. Her prose is beautiful too. It's poetic and a lot of lines just knock you flat but it usually doesn't get yucky-purple, which is a tricky balance to find. If you're into surreal fantasy or myth-inspired books I highly recommend checking her work out. The Orphan's Tales series is a good place to start, or the lovely standalone Deathless.

I read an amazing book once called Frost by Marianne Baer. It never came out in paperback; the few reviews were horrible, which I didn't understand; and I don't think she wrote anything else.

This book was an atmospheric mystery with a KILLER of a surprise ending. Whoa. It blew my mind. The reviewers said something like it didn't have a surprise ending at all... ? IT HAD ONE!

On the other hand, I sent the author some fan mail, and she never answered it. Oh well.

Katherine Alice Applegate. She is AMAZING. She has written the ANIMORPHS series, the Remnents series, and the Rosco Riley Rules series.

This isn't so much a little-known author as one who should maybe be better known. If you like Jodi Picoult (as I do) then please try Diane Chamberlain. Her books have certain similarities (though I hate making author comparisons) and are brilliant. I think she deserves at least equal fame.

For those who are unfamiliar with the historic fiction genre, the name Philippa Gregory springs to mind. Although Philippa is an extremely talented and well written writer, for me Anne O' Brien is the queen of historical fiction. From her mind-blowing approach to lesser known historical figures to her sheer love and passion for history, Anne should be given more recognition for her talent.
