Mervyn Peake

Post by Artdude »

My favourite author alongside Dickens.

Peake's Gormenghast trilogy has been something of a cult since it's conception in the 1940's. Never before has fantasy been so intricate and dark. I hate the word "fantasy" because it implies spaceships, and all other manner of idiotic bright lights. Rather, this is dark hearted nightmare fantasy - Peake's imagination spewed onto the page with grotesque characters and immensely complex descriptions of setting.
It is set in an ambiguous time, with ambiguous accounts of civilisation, in an ambiguously told, barely sane style.

Anyone ever read Gormenghast? It's not for the faint of heart.
