I am far too young to list either of these authors as my answer, but it's truth.
My favorite childhood authors were Edward Stratemeyer, who created Nancy Drew, and Donald Bain, who ghostwrote the Murder, She Wrote series.

My mother was always so protective of her childhood Nancy Drew book collectibles, but that didn't stop me. I snuck in every day, read a couple chapters, and put the books back where I found them, hoping she wouldn't notice.

Now I'm a grown up and I can read whichever books I feel like. Adulthood is great :)

Lori Foster... With "The Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor" series, the "Love Under Cover" series, and the "SBC Fighters" series among a few of her works she kept me spell bound and on the edge of my seat for months on end. Action, adventure, mystery, and red hot romance... her books have it all. I thought I was in a Lori Foster coma by the time I finished those three series alone. I think I forgot to eat at times, my sleep suffered and I looked like I had been through the ringer... but I had a big ol' smile on my face when it was all said and done. What more can I say. Lori is a fantastic story writer... I only wish she could keep pumping them out as fast as I can read them. I highly recommend her books!

I have always enjoyed writing stories, creating scenarios and dreamed of becoming a published author but life took a few turns away and led me down a different path. Now I have returned to my first love of writing thanks to Robin Jones Gunn. Where were her books when I was a teenager? Thru her characters I found hope to dream again. She is an amazing author with a heart that loves Jesus.

When I was a boy in the sixties the How and Why Wonder series of books started to appear. I would save up my pocket money to buy them. The one on Time was my favourite. It fascinated me that a period in history (Ancient Rome, for example) was once the present. It was their "now". I also remember one on the weather (also fascinating), and many others.

Another I recall was RV Cassill's book The Writing of Fiction, which I came across when I was eleven. It's still one of the best books on the subject, though possibly I am biased. The middle section of the book consists of a number of short stories by various authors, including "The Lady with the Pet Dog" by Chekhov.

More recently, Giuseppe Di Lampedusa, Leo Perutz, and others, have impressed me.

For me it was Danielle Steele. I started reading harlequin books as a teenager and branched out to longer books and series.

I started really getting into reading in middle school with City of Embers by Jeanne Duprau and the Dead is series by Marlene Perez. Since then my taste has definitely matured into authors like Alexa Riley, C.M. Steele, and Aurora Rose Reynolds!

hahah, I feel as if I may be one of the older readers on this thread....

The first book I ever remember reading (as a young'un) that made a definite impact on me and left me with the thought that I wanted to write my own books someday was E.B. White's Trumpet of the Swan.

I still have my much used and much loved original 1972 printing of the book on the bookshelf right next to my desk. :)

Latest Review: "Crossing in Time" by D.L. Orton

The Nancy Drew series! I had a ton of books as a kid that I loved, but Nancy Drew was the first set that I collected myself as a child. I also loved anything by Shel Silverstein, I found the whole idea of poetry to be really fascinating when I discovered it. Roald Dahl was another author that really opened me up to the world of fantasy and magical storytelling.

To me, it was definitely Edward Stratemeyer. My love towards the series of Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew really makes my life miserable with books. Until now.

Roald Dahl/Enid Blyton were the first books I chose to read as a child. My love for those books then has encouraged a lifetime of reading.
