Good question.

I'd pick James Swain. He's the author of the Tony Valentine books. It's a series about a retired cop who catches casino cheats. Based on his own life's experiences. I think it would be fascinating to hear his stories of punks scaming casinos. Probably because this is stuff I never think about or I'm not smart enough to conjure it up or maybe I'm too chickensh** to try something like that. Anyhoo, that's who'd I pick.

Edgar Allen Poe would prob be my first choice. tho it might be a little scary once that guy was drunk...he'd pretty much scare me sober so drunk who knows.

and it'd be like 8 shots...im not a beer person. ha and then i'd have to chain smoke like a pack of cigarettes...cause that's what happens when i drink.
Good choice. That would be one of mine. But I think I would not drink with him. I would go exploring with him in a dark, damp cellar.

I would have to say I'd like to either have a drink with or lunch with Ayn Rand or Isaac Asimov. Both were absolutely brilliant in my mind, though I would probably disagree with Asimov's philosophical view point...I really love his writings and he was qutie a brilliant man scientifically. Why am I hanging out with Russians?

Because they are actually considered to have broader minds than Americans as a whole and are very important in the way the new world order will work?

I'm not trying to hate on anyone, but to me it just seems like Augusten Burroughs is some kid who had to experience some wacky sh*t, and then made the best out of it by writing about it, maybe making some money. idk i think there are much better writers out there. i feel like anyone can do what he's done.

Wow, Mr (A) Burroughs certainly isn't very popular on here. I like him because he's turned his perhaps negative life experience into something positive. What's more, he's also able to laugh about it. I like his understated style and found him a breath of fresh air from some of the more 'aren't I clever' pretentious writers out there. It made a nice change, but obviously he can't please everyone! :D

See thing is, yeah we get that you guys don't like Augusten Burroughs, but that doesn't mean others aren't allowed to enjoy his work or to "want to have a beer" with him. Same goes for any other author. I've not read his work yet myself, but even if I do really dislike his work, I'm not going to slag him off and run him down to others who have professed a fondness for him or his work.

Like whoever you want to like folks, taste is subjective. Don't ever apologise for enjoying the work of someone others do not like.

i was only voicing my opinion of an author, i didn't tell her to stop reading his work. i myself have only read one book from him.. maybe the others are really good, who knows?

i'm sorry if it offended anybody, i didn't intend too. but if you told me that bukowski was just a dirty old drunk that wrote terrible poetry and worse novels i wouldn't take it personally.

I think it would have to be Umberto Eco for me, I just hope I could understand half of what he says :)

I'd have loved to have shared a drink or ten with Dylan Thomas.
