Re: Author hated most

Post by Amheiser »

I can't really say that I hate Stephen King but I can't read any more of his books since the last one I read. I don't even remember the name of it but it was about a guy who lost his job and his wife and his house was being torn down to build a highway and it all seemed so depressing and there was no way out for him and it had such a depressing ending that I just don't even want to try another Stephen King book. I started reading Stephen King's books to "cure" myself of being terribly frightened by horror in films and in writing and I thought if I read enough of it that my phobia would get better and it did but I think being left so depressed is worse. I am looking forward to the movie version of the Dark Tower series because I liked those books. They were a little different than his usual writing and I'm curious to see what Ron Howard does with those books because his other movies have all been very well done.

"JK Rowling ...managing to sell such a volume of badly written books "

This was posted and another poster agreed.

Could you tell me what is so "badly written" about JK Rowling's books? I didn't notice.

I agree. Harry Potter isn't my favorite, but the books are far from being poorly written. They're quite good. Again, not my favorite, but Rowling is a quality author whose success is well deserved.

While I have no opinion about him as a person, I certainly hate the novels written by Martin Amis -- or at least, I hated the ones I read when he was first making his name as an author, so much so that I decvided enough was enough and I wouldn't be reading any more, no matter how much they got praised by the critics. This is a decision I've felt no inclination to change during the twenty years since I first made it.

If in your childhood you want something truly thought provoking and of an entirely fabricated existence, read 'The Edge Chronicles' by Paul Stewart, illustrated by the infinitely brilliant Chris Riddell. So much more exciting.

I respect J.K.Rowling as a person however. Just not her media persona as advocate of poor writing.
There is plenty of room for disagreement about books amongst friends, but there are limitations, and sometimes somebody says, or writes, something which I can only dismiss as complete drivel. The Harry Potter books are truly outstanding works of fiction, fully deserving all the praise heaped on them by the millions of readers who love them. I have read them several times and will no doubt read them all again.

I couldn't agree more. Meyer and her runner-ups ruined the fantasy genre bookshelves in book stores. Ever since the sparkling vampires came in fashion, I've been looking with an unpleasant frown at the fantasy bookshelves in bookstores. I know the books are meant for very young teenage auditory, but it wouldn't have hurt her to be a little more creative and not to use such plain language. I don't know what irritates me more about her - that she disappointed me with 4 whole books or that she drove a menace of fantasy wanna-be authors, which flooded bookstores with junk.

I also believe Rowling is one of the most hated authors of this century. I've read numerous interviews and watched documentations, in which she admitted she has received countless offending letters, mostly from parents. Not only that, but people have also been telling her what to write and how to change the story so that their children wouldn't read her... *unflattering epithets*. :(

To Robercjgraves- An author who doesn't read? What? How is that possible?

J.K Rowling, she has made so many books, and none of them are shelf worthy in my view. Most of her books are on one wizard which, lets face it, should have been removed from the storyline as it would make it much more interesting hearing about the actual school and it's hidden puzzles than a teenage boy struggling to make it through puberty and magic at the same time, it's just a silly story.

In truth, if the main character wasn't so BORING, it would be a much more interesting story, but alas, we were stuck with a nerdy teen.

She could do better!

It's funny, I can't think of any authors I actually hate. I'm irked by the guys who write conservative drivel but they have their audience I guess...just keep it away from me. There are authors like Danielle Steel but she too has her place in the world for junk reading. If I don't like an author I just don't read them.

I used to really like James Patterson but now his books set my teeth on edge as so formulaic, predictable and full of how wonderful Alex Cross is and how despicable the villian is etc etc....I started to get bored of them but my Mum still buys them all for me no matter how often I tell her to stop! Then I feel obliged to read them which makes me dislike them even more! Not so much hate as really irritating!

I know there are plenty of authors and critics alike who would probably envy her for her sudden rise to fame, an ascent from pennilessness. She worked hard and succeeded. That's what the rest of us hope to do. I consider Stephanie Meyer, too, for her having undertaken an endeavor that's not for the fainthearted. To every writer out there, famous or just starting out, keep it up!

I don't think there's any author that I can genuinely say I 'hate' as a person because I don't know any of them as a person! But there's obviously going to be an authors who's BOOKS I dislike and that's a completely different thing. I can't really read Stephen King, just generally find his books boring and dull.

I have to disagree with those who say they 'Hate' E.L James though. Yes, the 50 shades books were written appallingly but the actual author is really modest and down to earth. Written poorly or not, she still made millions of quid and the only thing she wanted to buy with it was a new car!

I'm tempted to add "with a lot to be modest about" ... but it's Christmas, so I won't!

I would have to say Stephanie Myers. Glittering vampires and emo teenage girls just wasnt good tales to me. Maybe I'm just biased to the classical Dracula stories.
