I meant Jackie Collins, not Joan. Sorry.robertcjgraves wrote:Joan Collins because when asked who she reads she said, "I don't have time to read." What kind of author doesn't read? A: a really bad one.

Could you tell me what is so "badly written" about JK Rowling's books? I didn't notice.

I agree. Harry Potter isn't my favorite, but the books are far from being poorly written. They're quite good. Again, not my favorite, but Rowling is a quality author whose success is well deserved.FNAWrite wrote:"JK Rowling ...managing to sell such a volume of badly written books "

There is plenty of room for disagreement about books amongst friends, but there are limitations, and sometimes somebody says, or writes, something which I can only dismiss as complete drivel. The Harry Potter books are truly outstanding works of fiction, fully deserving all the praise heaped on them by the millions of readers who love them. I have read them several times and will no doubt read them all again.Artdude wrote:J.K.Rowling - for managing to sell such a volume of badly written books on the most uninteresting wizard ever. If in your childhood you want something truly thought provoking and of an entirely fabricated existence, read 'The Edge Chronicles' by Paul Stewart, illustrated by the infinitely brilliant Chris Riddell. So much more exciting.
I respect J.K.Rowling as a person however. Just not her media persona as advocate of poor writing.

I couldn't agree more. Meyer and her runner-ups ruined the fantasy genre bookshelves in book stores. Ever since the sparkling vampires came in fashion, I've been looking with an unpleasant frown at the fantasy bookshelves in bookstores. I know the books are meant for very young teenage auditory, but it wouldn't have hurt her to be a little more creative and not to use such plain language. I don't know what irritates me more about her - that she disappointed me with 4 whole books or that she drove a menace of fantasy wanna-be authors, which flooded bookstores with junk.XxBelarusxX wrote:Stephenie Meyer. Twilight wasn't that great of series, it certainly never lived up to all the fuss, and personally when I think of vampires I don't think of skin that sparkles in sunlight when I hear that of something sparkling I think of fairies and pixies.
I also believe Rowling is one of the most hated authors of this century. I've read numerous interviews and watched documentations, in which she admitted she has received countless offending letters, mostly from parents. Not only that, but people have also been telling her what to write and how to change the story so that their children wouldn't read her... *unflattering epithets*.

In truth, if the main character wasn't so BORING, it would be a much more interesting story, but alas, we were stuck with a nerdy teen.
She could do better!

I have to disagree with those who say they 'Hate' E.L James though. Yes, the 50 shades books were written appallingly but the actual author is really modest and down to earth. Written poorly or not, she still made millions of quid and the only thing she wanted to buy with it was a new car!
I'm tempted to add "with a lot to be modest about" ... but it's Christmas, so I won't!
