I'm embarrassed to say I've never read A Tale of Two Cities before, but am currently reading it. It's much different than I thought it'd be. It's actually quite funny in places, which I didn't expect. I didn't read the wikipedia writeup or anything like that before starting this book, because I wanted to see it with my own mind, not someone else's ideas. So with that said, I'd better not say too much more about the book, except that it certainly deserves its place in the list of classics.

I love A Christmas Carol. Between reading the story and seeing the movies several times, I think I know that story pretty well.

i've read charles dickens a lot, and in no other writer have i found such biting sarcasm, and the dark humour, that makes you smile and cringe at the same time. If you're really intrested in his biography, read David Copperfield, it's semi autobiographical, and tells a lot about his growing days and struggles of early life.

I've read a Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. Didn't like the last one, but the others are really nice :) His characters are easy to relate to and of course, the humour is hard to dislike :)

I too am a fan. My first Dickens read was Oliver Twist. I was surprised I liked it as much as I did.

I have only read A Christmas Carol, but I enjoyed it very much. I would like to read Great Expectations next, I've heard mixed reviews about it.

I think it's his language as much as anything that I love about Dickens. Some sentences are very long - a whole paragraph maybe - but he takes you straight to where he is, so much you can even smell it in your imagination. The world he wrote about is long gone, but he enables us to feel we know it as we read.

I am a huge Charles Dickens fan. I've read Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Nicholas Nickleby, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, and A Christmas Carol. At one point I had attempted to read all of his works, but there are just so many of them! I would still like to read all of his works at some point, but I did have to start reading works by other authors. As a children's librarian, I have to at least attempt to keep up on current works which limits my ability to read the classics as much as I'd like.

I have read Great Expectations, A tale of two cities, Hard Times and the Old Curiosity Shop. The worst for me is The Old curiosity shop. I really don't understand that book. Charles Dickens is an extremely talented writer. He is very descriptive, however, some sections of the books can be very boring.

Charles Dickens is my all-time favorite author. Having read all of his works, I can say that while they're all good, some stand out much more than others. My all-time favorite book is David Copperfield, which--as another poster mentioned--is semi-autobiographical. It's a long book but worth every second of the time. I was the "Forest Gump" of its day, containing equal parts humor, irony, love, and tragedy, all set against a backdrop of the narrator's personal growth. William Makepiece Thackeray (author of "Vanity Fair" and a contemporary reviewer) said of David Copperfield, "There are little words and phrases in his book which are like personal benefits to the reader." I counldn't agree more.

Everyone will have their own list of favorite Dickens works. While I liked "A Tale of Two Cities", I actually liked "Great Expectations", "Our Mutual Friend", "Little Dorrit", and "Bleak House" a lot more. "Nicholas Nickleby" is also a fun read (an ealier work and therefore a little less dark). Unless you're a hard-core Dickens fan, I'd recommend avoiding "Hard Times" and "Martin Chuzzlewit". Like a few other posters, I also found "The Old Curiosity Shop" a little slow and melodramatic (even for Dickens).

So, what are others' favorite Dickens works? What did you like about them?

Charles Dickens is a definite favorite of mine because of his outrageous wit and painfully brutal portrayals of greed and cruelty.
