I have read at least one book by William H. Coles and the plot was not solved well. Some characters were left hanging, is this his style of writing?

I was captivated by his novel called The spirit of want from the very beginning. There's no doubt he is a skilled writer and keeps you turning the page.

Well, I only read The Spirit of Want and that was more than enough for me to never touch another of his books again.

However, my biggest issue wasn't with unsolved plots, but with thoroughly unlikeable characters.

I read McDowell and enjoyed it. I do agree, he is able to make his characters very unlikable. His style is a bit different, but I still liked the book.
