Who is your favorite autobiographical author, why would you recommend their autobiography??

The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom is probably my very favorite autobiography.
It is the incredible story of how her and her father and sister hid Jews during the Holocaust. It illustrates the emotions and life of those kinds of people so well. It also portrays the awfulness of the concentration camps. But on top of all of that, it coneys the utter despair and the overwhelming sense of hope during those times. It goes through the highs and the lows of her life, and paints a beautiful picture of forgiveness, love, and courage.
I would absolutely recommend this book.

I'm not sure that a memoir and an autobiography are quite the same thing, but two very good memoirs that I read for a college course a couple years ago are Bone Black by bell hooks and Ecology of a Cracker Childhood by Janisse Ray. They detail two very different experiences of growing up in the South. Not only do they provide great perspective, but also they're both enjoyable to read, particularly the latter.

Overall, I've not read very been autobiographies, so I'm looking forward to reading other people's suggestions.

JD Vance is my current favorite autobiographical author right now. He wrote Hillbilly Elegy and it is a memoir of his life while he was growing up until he became a Law student with Yale University. It portrayed his humble beginnings, the struggles he encountered with a single parent who was a drug addict and how he ended up living with his eccentric grandmother. He has come a long way now being current the Vice-President of the United States.
