George Eliot

Post by david paul »

I find that George Eliot is consistently a pleasing and invigorating author. I enjoy the little philosophic musings; the depth of her character development; the deft storytelling; the biting social commentary. All in all, I'd say that she is my favorite author at present. Of course, I am only into my second book, so my experience is limited. I began with Danial Daronda; I am now nibbling away at Middlemarch. Middlemarch is better, if you ask me; better conceived as a story; more characters of interest. I would love to hear what others think of Goerge Eliot, pro and con.

I've read Middlemarch several times. I find there is always something in the dialogue that I like to visit again. I find her writing to be very adept at being able to express emotions in her characters while not giving it all away. Middlemarch leads you on and on with a potential almost expected climax with every page, then every chapter...never quite getting what you expected but not disappointed either. To say that she is a clever writer is an understatement, she writes beautifully and it's a shame that there are no modern writers like her.

I tend to re-read old authors over and over again because I love their command and use of the English language and enjoy the gallantry in the stories as well.

I guess I don't have anything negative to say other than I wish she had written more!

George Eliot is one of the greatest writers of the nineteenth century, Middle March is her master piece. I can really relate to the struggles of the characters. Casaubon toiling away at his unifying mythology that no one will ever read. Dr. Lydgate with his grand schemes to reform the hospital ,only to run head long into provincial stubbornness, with a silly resentful wife riding his back like a nightmare.
