The Italian writer and philosopher Umberto Eco, best known for his novel The Name of the Rose, has died last night aged 84. I have read and loved this book. RIP!

He did a wonderful live read event here at the University of Rochester in 2008, with Salman Rushdie. Eco was a great author.

He'll be missed.

i especially enjoy his "Foucault's Pendulum" and have read it several times, each time with pleasure.

First Harper Lee, now Eco ... WHO WILL BE NEXT ? *checks his pulse* It's coming over in Morse code -.--, ---, ..-, ...., ,- *Translation* "You have nothing to fear DATo. The operative word is author and you are noting but an unknown authorling."

Wheeew! I was getting ready to call 911. *Takes his temperature anyway, just to be on the safe side.*

I love Foucault's Pendulum, the ultimate conspiracy novel, and is a delightfully amusing romp into the world of goofy conspiracy theories.

Rule of all conspiracy rumors: Eventually the culprits will end up the Knights Templar. ha ha

Name of the Rose is also a fine book, and they made a pretty good movie about it. But Pendulum is the tops. A difficult read but worth the effort. It can be downloaded via Kindle.

Only on page 40, but it's really good. I've been laughing non stop. Good satire.

I read the novel a few years ago. I recall it was quite mysterious. And very good! The kind of work that you read even because of the tention of the plot itself... wondering what will happen. I think that all of the greatest long novels require lots of time and effort.

I hope his soul rests,.. He contributed to the world..

I have read his 'Foucault's Pendulum' and enjoyed it a lot. It is one of those books that you want to read again and again. By the way I like the thing that he operates with a lot of interesting information in his books, it is interesting to check later which facts are fiction, which not.

I enjoyed reading the Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. It is a murder mystery set in a medieval abbey. I am sorry to find out that he passed away.
