I am surprised there is no thread about Anais Nin, to me she is one of the greatest authors of the kind of books where romance is shown as it is, no idealised bullshit but real motivations and decisions of people. She is also good at describing the way women feel their erotic dimension. I am currently reading her "Delta of Venus" - it is a compilation of different stories with different characters.

Your post was timely ... I just off to my local library & had been wondering what to pick up next. I'll now give Anais Nin a try on your recommendation & post my opinion anon. Thanks

Sure, you may also be willing to take a peek at the film "Henry and June"
based on the life of Anais Nin and her writing. This is how I found out about Nin and I find both the film and the book I am currently reading highly refreshing in terms of a deeper look at romance going beyond the "go get the highest bidder" attitude usually promoted in the media nowadays.

I read Delta of Venus and was bowled away by the complexity of charatcer and situation that Nin evokes. Even though in many ways she was very much a product of her time, this still feels like exceptionally modern writing, and for me it sits comfortably alongside books like The Passion of New Eve, by Angela Carter. Thanks very much for the post - I'll go and dig DoV out for a re-read!

Love, love, love Anais Nin. She is my favourite author, Under A Glass Bell was the first collection of her short stories that I read. Her writing is so unique and so beautiful. I'm hoping to get all of her diaries that she wrote as well.
