Donald Goines "Urban Author

Post by Tip the Bottle »

Donald Goines is an author I was introduced to by way of a rap song by Ludacris. The line went "So I picked up a couple books by Donald Goines,: About the business of this sh*t, how to flip a few coins" so on a whim I picked up the novel "Dopefiend". The book felt so gritty and real to me I finished the book in no more than three sittings and was hooked. Donald Goines is known as a "street writer" and usually if not always writes about minority ghetto life.
"When the give you things, ask yourself why.
When you're grateful to them for giving you the things you should already have anyway, ask yourself why."

Two other gritty novels from that era are Iceberg Slim's Mama Black Widow and Chester Himes's Cotton Comes to Harlem.

I too enjoy Donald Goines and have 6 of his books in my personal stash. I have 'til this day still enjoyed "Whoreson". He is gritty and his depiction of the urban lifestyle and means to understand one's circumstances does leave a few unnerved. I learned about D. Goines when I lived in NY in the early 90's and have been a fan ever since. His books are classic and can still relate to the struggles many face in the ghetto currently. Sad to see the truth in your face but brilliant to see it is still relevant 20/30 years later in print.

I heard about him and have been dying to get my hands on one of his books. After reading this I see it's a must.
