I need some book recommendations
Skippy Dies by Paul Murray - OMG I just read this and it was great. Quirky, smart, profane. I LOLed frequently.
All Ann Tyler books, but especially Ladder of Years
Tom Wolfe and John Irving, even though these guys can't stand each other, I like them both very much, and I like the epicness of thier works
Stephen King - Read Under the Dome recently and I loved it
So I guess my preference is for long, smart, funny books/authors.

Skippy Dies is a masterpiece, some parts are drop dead funny and yet it is still a great story. Why don't you try some other Paul Murray books. I have only read Skippy Dies so I am going to try some of his others.Annna wrote:Can you help? I like all good fiction but some of my favorite authors/books are:

The Descent - Jeff Long
Year Zero - Jeff Long
American Psycho - Brett Easton Ellis
The Blind Assassin - Margaret Atwood
Filth - Irvine Welsh (don't read this if you have a weak stomach - the decline and fall of a corrupt, drug and sex addicted Scottish policeman)
Sacred Games - Vikram Chandra
Pillars of the Earth / World Without End - Ken Follett (the prose is a bit simplistic and the plot lines are pretty formulaic, but they are great stories. Interestingly, I can't bear anything else by this author.)
The 1000 Splendid Autumns of Jacob de Zoet - David Mitchell. Anything by DM gets my thumbs up.
The Matthew Shardlake books by C J Sansom (medieval murder mysteries set in the reign of Henry VIII)
Good luck!

PRESIDENTIAL POWERS: a political thriller that discusses what's wrong with America and how to fix it.
THE LINCOLN AFFAIR: Some very strange coincidences during the last six weeks of Abraham Lincoln's life. Great fiction giving a plausible explanation.
THE RODINA PLOT: Russia doesn't know the cold war is over. This novel looks at how the Russian governemnt could be toppled.

Well, here's a list of six funny books, all of which aren't quite so commonly known:So I guess my preference is for long, smart, funny books/authors.
Edward Abbey, The Monkey Wrench Gang -- One of the first works of eco-fiction.
Diana Abu-Jaber, Arabian Jazz -- Considered, I believe, to be the first Arab-American novel.
Gerald Hugh Berners, The Camel -- A quaint little British cult classic.
Richard Brautigan, Trout Fishing in America -- A charming and nutty American cult classic.
Jim Dodge, Fup -- Another charming American cult classic.
