Official Review: Bluest Eyes in Texas: A Country Romance...
Bluest Eyes in Texas: A Country Romance Novel by S.A. Tadej is a love story set in Texas. Makenzie was about to start her final semester of college when she and her family moved to Texas from Oklahoma. She is from a well-off family and has never wanted for anything. When they arrive, Makenzie falls in love with the farmhand, Caleb. However, her parents do not approve because they believe that he is not good enough for her because he is a mere farmhand. When they find out about Caleb and Makenzie’s relationship, they fire Caleb and cut off Makenzie from him. Both Caleb and Makenzie are broken-up inside because of the separation.
This book was well-paced. It moved along at a decent clip, but it did not feel rushed. I feel like there was always something happening, whether it be plot development or character development. I think Makenzie and Caleb’s story was compelling and made reading this book a joy. The pace and story movement were my favorite parts of this book.
The part I disliked the most was the writing style. The writing was very simplistic. It conveyed the story, but it lacked a lot of refined imagery and interesting writing techniques. Tadej would, at times, state what was happening instead of describing it. Some parts were well described; however, it was inconsistent in the amount of details given. There were also a few minor grammar errors throughout the book.
The main characters in this book were interesting and dynamic. Makenzie went through a lot of struggles because she was torn between making her family happy and making herself happy. It gave her character an interesting arc throughout the book. I think her character was well-developed. A lot of the secondary characters were not as well developed, though. Her parents were not given many traits, which made them seem static. This made the book feel a bit unbalanced.
Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I genuinely enjoyed reading this book, and I would recommend it to those who enjoy romance or books about family dynamics. I am taking away a star because of the flat secondary characters and the writing style. I think if more of the characters were well-developed, this book would have been worthy of 4 stars. There are mentions of sexual content in this book, but nothing explicit. I would recommend this book to teenagers and up because of that. If you are looking for a quick romance novel to read, this is a good choice.
