Review of For the Summer
For the Summer by Camille Harte is a romance story that follows Cat and Will. They meet during the summer when they are just kids. Cat’s dad owns a marina, and Will’s family is one of the tourist families that comes to the marina for summer vacation. Their story starts on one of the docks with a not-so-nice encounter between the two of them. Somehow, they still become friends and become inseparable. Unfortunately, summer must come to an end, and Will has to leave. He promises to return the following summer. As the summers pass, there seems to be more than just a friendship brewing. However, Will is only ever there for the summer. Will this get in the way of their budding romance? You’ll have to read this book to find out.
The first half of the book is riveting. I haven’t been this engaged in a novel for a long time. Each chapter follows a summer in the life of Cat and Will. I found myself excited to read about each summer that they had together and what they would find out about themselves and each other. They go through ups and downs in their friendship, and the emotions had me feeling everything along with them.
The character development is great. Each character is described in a way that makes it easy to picture them, and their personalities are consistent throughout the book. Each person has little quirks that make it easy to relate to them. I felt like I got to know each character and was living the story with them.
The story slows down halfway through the book, and I didn’t like it as much at that point. The story starts focusing too much on the romance aspect, and the development just isn’t as good. There were a few times that I caught myself hoping to get to the end soon instead of enjoying the book as I read it. Another downfall is that the book does need another round of editing. There are several minor errors throughout the book.
I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. I wanted to give it a perfect rating, and I thought I would for a good portion of the book. Unfortunately, there are too many errors, and the second half of the book just isn’t as good as the first half. However, it is still a book that I enjoyed reading. I would suggest this book to anyone who loves a good romance novel. There’s quite a bit of profanity and a few sexual scenes, so I wouldn’t suggest this book to younger readers or anyone sensitive to these things.

One of my favorite things about this book was the way it was set up. Each chapter was a year with a title of something that happened that summer between Cat and Will. Along with the title were three tidbits about what was going on that year. It was such a unique idea that I found myself excited to look back and see what was big during that year. I would get anxious waiting to see the title of the chapter, hoping to get a hint of what was to come through each milestone summer.
