The novel, Love Is Never Past Tense, by Janna Yeshanova, is more than a simple love story. It opens with a scene of a suicide attempt by an old man, Serge, our protagonist. As he waits for his death in a drowning boat, he reminisces about his life. He remembers his first meeting with Janna on a beach in Odessa, Ukraine, when he was only twenty years old and an engineering student, and how they fell in love. The story unfolds as he reflects on their whirlwind romance, a hasty marriage followed by a divorce, and their lives over decades separated physically but never forgetting each other.

The book is based on a true story and encompasses several themes in addition to a love story. It features Russian culture, the collapse of the USSR, the plight of Jews, and the issues of immigration. The love story of Serge and Janna is a testament to true love that survives time and distance. But it also illustrates the naivety of youth, the consequences of hasty decisions, and the regret that never ends. The story progresses slowly in the beginning but picks up pace gradually and captivates the reader. The descriptions of the government protocol in communist Russia, the visa process, and corruption are both engaging and informative. The poems and quotations embedded in the narrative are remarkable. The descriptions of the various places and monuments in Italy, along with their brief histories, are remarkable—both fascinating and informative. The author has portrayed the emotions of the characters, especially Serge, really well. Readers can feel the love, regret, and emotional turmoil through his reflections on his past. Janna is a strong character in comparison to Serge. She is portrayed as a woman capable of making sound decisions and sticking to them. The part of her story in her own words is compelling and illustrates the integrity of the Jewish community and human behavior in general.

The novel is a short read, but a memorable one. There is nothing negative about the book, and it does not contain any graphic details unsuitable for young minds. The editing is good, and I noticed only one typo. There is no reason to deduct a star, so my rating of the book is 5 out of 5 stars.

The book is meaningful in the sense that it establishes the fact that true love never ends—it only awaits an opportunity to revive the passion. I would suggest this remarkably well-written book to people who like short, insightful novels.

*Love Is Never Past Tense* is a novel that dives into the most delicate complexities of love by Janna Yeshanova. It blends themes of loss with heartfelt memories of relationships that touch upon time. In this book, the author focuses on the ideas of emotional and physical resilience and also the mistakes of trying to reconcile the past with the present. In doing so, the author invites readers to take their own journeys of closure check. She also invites them to reflect on how love adds meaning to a life.

Yeshanova’s ability to portray the emotional landscape of the characters is striking. This is matched with the intricate details that surround love itself. The book also grapples with fears of the unknown and past regrets. Especially in the hope for a better future. Poignant is the burden that fills the souls of these characters and the way they attempt to untangle it. The wonderfully crafted prose has transcendental potential as she paints the story through heavily detailed reflections, internal dialogues, and character analysis.

One could claim that eloquently written prose simultaneously falters the emotional depth as the pacing can come off as unbearably slow. This is most prevalent within the more self-centered parts of the novel. What works in favor of Yeshanova is that this pacing is fitting within the overarching theme of the book. It encourages readers to contemplate their own personal history and as a result pause.

Overall, *Love Is Never Past Tense* is a tender and deep story from within, which speaks to people who have struggled with how love from the past still lingers with them over the years. Yes
