Emet is the chef at the Second Helpings At The Serve You Right Cafe, he is also an ex-con released after 10 years spent in the Big House for manslaughter. Eden Rose, a reformed alcoholic, is Emet's boss and fount of wisdom. Eden Rose's one liners were wonderful and full of sage advice. I loved them. She befriends everyone and dispenses her brand of wisdom and help. Emet has met someone he wants to date, Mercedes; he has a dilemma how does he tell her he is an ex-con.

Mercedes has her own problems, her mom left Mercedes and her brother Clay her house when she moved into assisted living. Mercedes promised that Clay could always stay in the house. Clay, is a good for nothing low life junkie that does not work nor does he want to work; dope is his life. Mercedes is moving out and leaving Clay in the house, and Clay is livid. Clay doesn't want to lose his meal ticket. Clay is going to do everything he can to stop Mercedes and cause trouble for Emet and Mercedes.

Ms. Jacobs shows just how tough life is for a Parolee to live, the restrictions they have placed on them, and how absurd some of them are. I was surprised at the common situations that could cause a Parole Officer to recommit the Parolee. It very sad the extend they are at the mercy of everyone from the Parole Officer to regular citizens. I felt very sorry for Emet and the situation he found himself with Mercedes brother, and at no fault of his own. Ms Jacobs shows the reality of living with an addict and living as a Parolee that has not had a female relationship in 10 years. Emet went in as a boy and came out a grown man. Though a short novella, this story is packed with emotion and action, never a dull motion. Emet and Mercedes have a few obstacles to overcome before they will find their happy ever-after.
