Official Review: In His Keeping by Maya Banks

Post by KellyS24 »

In His Keeping is the second novel in the Slow Burn series and tells the story of yet another Devereaux brother, Beau, and the woman he falls in love with, Ari. I loved the way this book started as it introduces Ari's parents and a preview of the beginning of their story of how their family came about. From the start, the beginning really got me ready and looking forward for what happens next. I really enjoy reading story lines with the whole damsel in destress type females and the strong, dominant heroine male types who take charge and protect the girl, always being there for them.

After her parents are kidnapped, Ari has only one person to turn to for help, Beau. After she hires him for his protection services and guidance of helping her find her parents, they develop feelings for each other. But, I must say was a naive and very unrealistic move to witness a relationship form so suddenly. Like old school Disney, it is love at first sight and falling in love instantly within the first day or two of meeting each other. A little annoying for my taste that made me roll my eyes as I realized this was going on only because who in their right mind honestly falls in love with someone they don't know on the spot? I mean really!!! I would have liked to see the attraction between them build and space out a little more than it was, where they could explore their feelings for one another in more detail rather than saying there it is, it's just there. The book would have improved so much more if it explored more relationship development between the two. For what it was, I did still appreciate the connection that both Ari and Beau shared that grows into a deep love that most people don't have the pleasure of even knowing.

Ari's character honestly is a little annoying. I say this only because the more I read of her, the more she seemed dependent on others to take care of her. And on the other hand, striving to prove to others how strong she could be, wanting to grow a back bone and stand up for herself. It's almost as if she was in constant war with herself and the hesitation between the two kind of threw me off at times. Like are you that starved for attention that you want the best of both worlds Ari? Choose the latter of your inner turmoil and grow up.

Book two of the Slow Burn series is a good read and quick paced, just as the first book. So don't miss out on Caleb, the first Devereaux brother, and Ramie's story in Keep Me Safe. Overall a good romantic suspense theme that I did not want to put down and I am excited to read about Zach and Anna Grace's story in the third book, Safe At Last!!!

Happy Reading everyone and enjoy :)
