What happens when the man you love has been chained and tortured for years to the point of insanity? What happens when the woman you are destined to love is the one who helped break you? Blood Vengeance is the second book of the Deathless Night series by L.E. Wilson and the timeline intertwines with the first book, Blood Hunger. It’s all right if you haven’t read Blood Hunger yet since this book takes you back and forth between timelines ensuring that you’re not going in completely blind.

Luukas Kreek, older brother of Nikulas from Blood Hunger, is a Master Vampire. With every vampire he has created, his power increases, making him one of the most powerful vampires to exist. Seven years ago, he thought he was invincible until a witch with the face of an angel proved him wrong. Keira Moss, the older sister of Emma from Blood Hunger who as it turns out is Nikulas’ soul mate, is a powerful witch whose magic was meant to protect her and her loved ones from their coven. Having been adult-napped several years ago by Leeha, the delusional admirer of Luukas, Keira was forced to help capture the Master Vampire and then made to help torture him. Of course she isn’t doing this willingly. No, Leeha has ensured Keira’s obedience by threatening to kill Emma.

I will say that Luukas is a pretty real character. He’s been through hell with no hope of reprieve and while the wounds would heal, he’s scarred by his experience both mentally and emotionally. He was stripped of his powers and left defenseless. Days meld together and time is lost to him. He can’t tell what’s real and what’s not. To him, Keira is his angel as well as his torturer. He can’t decide between wanting to keep her safe and wanting to kill her. He doesn’t believe in soul mates. He never has. He’s especially skeptical because Keira is his supposed soul mate. In Keira’s defense, her hand was being forced with her sister’s life hanging in the balance. She has to choose between the big, bad currently helpless Master Vampire whom she developed an attraction to moments before she stripped him of his powers and her sister whom she’s known and loved for years. The choice is obvious. Her character is redeemable. While Keira is made to participate in the madness, she does what little she can to help Luukas and one particular deed comes to bite her in the butt later.

I loved the werewolves. They’re funny, Scottish and hilariously wary when it comes to witches. What’s not to love about them? It was great seeing Nikulas as well and this time, with him assuming the role of the older sibling in light of his older brother’s slight insanity and need for vengeance. Aiden, Luukas’ Hunter, was a great character as well. Captured by Leeha and still capable of being cheeky.

This book was a little different for me. I prefer novels to have two or maximum three POVs. In this book, we’re jumping from character to character which I find is a little vexing and just confusing at times but that’s my opinion. If I’m reading a book, particularly romance, I like to keep it between the main couple. A short POV from another character such as the antagonist is all right if done sparingly but to jump between the POVs of about at least five characters is a bit of an overkill. It could use a little more action from the main couple as well or in general. Also, I couldn’t help but feel that Keira was a little too laidback about the whole thing after a while. While Luukas is struggling because of his torture, she seems to have forgotten her hand in it. Okay, not completely. She felt horrible about it but what was she doing to really heal him from the scars she’d been partially responsible for?

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. The plot was interesting and a little daring in having one main character torture the other despite them being destined for each other. I loved Luukas. His character was realistic despite the supernatural element. After everything he’s been through, why shouldn’t he be a little crazy? I like that he doesn’t just fall in love with Keira but has to fight against the desire to kill her and the desire to keep her safe from everything including himself. That being said, multiple POVs add a nice touch when used sparingly but too much and it just becomes confusing. Keira started off as a strong character but sadly, she became complacent and the story was moved forward by Luukas’ continuous struggle of the poetic ‘to kill or not to kill’ dilemma. However, I’m not going to write off this series from my reading list just yet. I’m looking forward to the future books and seeing more of the werewolves as well as Aiden. Readers who really don’t like multiple POVs, consider yourselves warned. Otherwise, I think readers who love supernatural romance novels should give this a read.
