Sweet Little Lies

Post by Karen Hope »

Sweet Little Lies
Author: Jill Shalvis

I have read books by Jill Shalvis before and have enjoyed them, but this one was not one of my favorites.
Basically, it’s a love story based on a woman whose father’s drunk driving was responsible for the death and injury of multiple people in a terrible auto accident. Pru has made it her life’s mission to make amends for his actions to the best of her ability. Giving Finn O’Reilly the money to buy an Irish pub after the death of his father (a victim in the accident) to support him and his brother was just one such attempt to right a wrong.
Moving into the area, and working as a captain of a tour boat, Pru has made her life in the small sub community of San Francisco that surrounds the Pub. The close knit friends take care of each other and provide all the family Pru needs…. Including of course her new friend Fin (the recipient of her anonymous gift).
Fin has no idea that Pru is there trying to make amends and falls for her sweet, loving personality. Likewise, Pru falls for Fin. His fun loving, charismatic personality charm her from day one. The story evolves kind of slowly from here with Pru debating whether or not to tell fin about her link to the auto accident that killed his parents, and after finally deciding that yes, she needed to tell him, she kept putting it off waiting for a “better” time.
Well, as the story evolves, they fall in love with each other but of course her omission of telling him of her link to the accident that killed his parents and also that she was the benefactress of the money used to start his pub is revealed and Fin’s thrown for a loop. Now Fin is left feeling deceived and has to decide is she worth it?
Personally, I didn’t see what the holdup was or how she thought waiting would make it better, but there you have it. Other than that, there didn’t really didn’t seem to be any angst or problem that needed to be overcome. Overall, it just seemed to be a bunch of should I tell him, or shouldn’t I? If I decide to tell him, when should I tell him? I think that the book could have used more depth to it. I actually found myself wanting to put it down several times to pick up another book but I made myself finish. All-in-all, it wasn’t terrible, but Jill Shalvis is a great author and I expected more.

I too read it and felt like it was a bit new and different from Jill Shalvis. I am a fan who has read ALL of her books. This series is set apart and different in many ways. I liked where the characters ended up - but the story was a challenge for me as I would not have had the reaction the character did to the news, and I would have been honest and up front about it.

The rest of the series seems to get better, as I have already seen and reviewed the next book, and I loved it. Give it a chance, you might also. If not, tell us about it. I like how you are honest and real in your reviews.

My review for the book is:

Pru wants to meet Finn. She wants to talk to him, touch him and more. He just has no clue she's alive. Or does he?

Finn looks at her when she is all wet. Looking like a drowned rat. Suddenly the chance of a lifetime opens up. Pru has only to reveal the secret...

Such a sexy and fun story. I was blown away by the feels I got reading this book. I felt it all. Really great start to the Heartbreaker Bay series. I cannot wait for the next book!
