Romantic River by Terry Atkinson is a romantic, symbolic story about Jessica an ambitious, goal-oriented sales engineer trying to find true love. The majority of the story is set outside of Jessica’s house on the river bank where she likes to watch the water flow, stare at the blue sky, and feel the harmony of everything around her. On the other side of the riverbank there are also Egyptian geese that the author uses as symbolism throughout the story.
It all begins with Jess lying outside by the riverbank thinking about all the goals she had accomplished. While thinking, she realized the only goal she hadn’t accomplished was love. She had a boyfriend for a long time but they had been missing something. So, Jess does a lot of soul-searching as she tries to reconcile her love and fill the hole that tore them apart before.
Overall, my favorite thing about Romantic River was the symbolic nature of Jess’ relationship. Every part of the story was filled with romance and symbolism that will make any romantic’s heart melt. That made the book for me because the book started with symbolism and ended with symbolism, and I loved it. On the contrary, I think the end of the book was rushed and while it didn’t ruin the book, it made the end less enjoyable. That is what I liked most about Romantic River and what I think could be improved.
Altogether I’d rate Romantic River 3 out of 4 stars. I’d rate Romantic River this way because there wasn’t enough detail and it was rushed at the end. The majority of the story was mainly Jess thinking. Then when you finally get to the end, everything is rushed and I felt that it was missing key elements to making the book feel complete. However this didn't ruin the book, and it still was very romantic and it was definitely worth reading.
Lastly, this novel is a romantic and symbolic short story that leaves you feeling like you need more. That is why I think many YA and some adults will enjoy it. Furthermore, I think adults that like short, clean, and romantic books will enjoy this as well. The symbolism and overall romance of the story is something every person in a relationship should read. To end, Romantic River is a romantic quick read that will warm YA’s as well as adult’s hearts like it did mine.
