Lights of Love by C.S. Lane is a fantastical romance novel set in small-town Vermont. Short and sweet, it revolves around the idea of rebelling against age-old rules and following your own destiny, be it good or bad. While struggling with your own inner demons, can you help someone else battle theirs? What if that someone is a soldier returning home from war to a less-than-sympathetic town determined to pin all their problems on his battle-torn mind? When your love just isn't enough, it may be time for a little magic.

Tessra El De LeRay is a young woman constantly being lectured by her village elders for being too headstrong, too independent. Her people live deep in the woods of Vermont, separated from humans by a one-way forcefield they are taught to never pass through. Tessra isn't convinced that all humans are as cruel and evil as the elders say, so she ventures outside to see for herself. Her punishment is to lose her magic, her family, her memories, and her home. She is now a human herself and her new name is Tess Delaney. Meanwhile, a hired assassin called The Shadow is lurking nearby, picking off his victims one by one. Has he met his match in feisty Tess or will her heritage prove to be his undoing?

Lights of Love could definitely have used some serious editing. It overflowed with grammar and spelling mistakes, wordy sentences with too many adjectives, and dialogue that lacked personality. Seasoned assassins, for example, do not say "Crap" or "Yay". A grown woman berating a man twice her size doesn't say, "I'll kick your butt!". Even if this book was meant for a younger audience, the writing was just too childish. I couldn't take Tess seriously as a protagonist or heroine.

Tess's love interest is Payton Bennett, the son of a farming family recently home from Afghanistan. His PTSD is a reigning theme in the book and I really liked that the author showed it from the soldier's perspective. The townspeople were terrified of him and demanded the police arrest him for The Shadow's handiwork, but Tess fought for his right to remain free. He's not a psychopath, he has an illness that needs treatment. I respected his struggle and sympathized with his pain.

The setting was generally ignored, except for a few mentions of the buildings Tess visited. They were brief, maybe a paragraph long. As someone who has never visited Vermont, I was curious as to what the landscape is like.

Overall, the plot itself was unique and interesting. As long as I ignored the writing, the book kept my attention from start to finish. I only wish there was more background information, such as who Tess's people really are and why some of her magic requires a chant while the rest is automatic. I would rate Lights of Love 3 out of 4 stars and recommend it to any paranormal romance fans who like a bit of eroticism without full-length sex scenes.

The premise sounds promising and the plot seems really good. Too bad, though, about the errors. The book seems to need another round of editing. Great job on the review.
