Ferocious by Stella Williams is the first book in the Secret of Ceres Series. The story takes place in a futuristic America where Aura, known as witches and warlocks before the creation of Ceres, feared what would happen if humans knew they existed. So, they built Ceres, a sanctuary that magically protects them from the outside world. However, there is a division among the Aura. Some enjoy the safety that Ceres offers while others prefer the autonomy of living in the outside world among humans and vampires.
Farrah Andromeda is an Aura who lives in the outside world. Fierce, uninhibited, and a bit reckless, Farrah feels confined in Ceres and loves the freedom that living and working in the human world affords. As a private investigator, she willingly disregards the rules to do what she thinks is right, unlike straight-laced Donovan Mars. Donovan is a conservative Security Force Officer who is a legend among his peers. He lives in Ceres and doesn’t understand why anyone would want to live in the outside world. Ever the rule-follower, he disapproves of Farrah and her reckless, impulsive ways.
When a teen Aura goes missing, a leader of Ceres commissions Farrah and Donovan to investigate the disappearance. Sparks fly, and though the two are reluctant to work together, they can’t deny the electricity between them. Will they be able to resist their burning attraction to each other and focus on the case? They must if they want to find the missing Aura.
One aspect of this story that I like is the vivid way in which the author describes the human world and Ceres. The author’s engaging style made it easy to visualize not just Ceres but also the futuristic, supernatural society in which humans, vampires, and Aura all coexist. I also like the interesting sub-plots threaded throughout the story. Though the main story-line centers around the missing Aura, other events in the plot include conflicts among the leaders of Ceres, problems with the faulty barrier that protects Ceres, confrontations with rebellions, and skirmishes with vampires.
Furthermore, the characters are unique and interesting. From Farrah’s Aura friends to the vampires who assist them in their quest for the missing Aura, the characters are diverse and original. However, some of the characters lack development. Farrah’s friends, for example, are characters that I want to know more about. Farrah, Enora, Disrayan, and Zazzie are very close, yet they also keep secrets, especially when it comes to their love lives. As this is the first book in a series, I would assume that subsequent books focus on developing these characters and exposing their secrets.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Ferocious is a fast-paced story with a vivid setting, intriguing characters, and a spicy romance. There are some grammatical errors, which is why I couldn’t give it 4 stars. Though most of the errors don’t affect the overall flow or context of the reading, the book will benefit from another round of proofreading and editing.
This is an erotic story that is sexually graphic. Furthermore, it contains vulgarity, and there are several violent scenes. I, therefore, would not recommend it to children and young adults. Also, people who don’t like reading about abuse and human trafficking should avoid the novel. However, people who like steamy supernatural mysteries with a strong female protagonist will enjoy this book.
