[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "One Step Closer" by Kaia Misk.]
Drama. Passion. Suspense. Each comes out in full force in Kaia Misk’s novel One Step Closer. Tish Hadak was the unfortunate victim of violent crime in her college years. Over twenty years later, she is still left with scars and has difficulty letting people into her life. This doesn’t stop the electric attraction from forming with the attractive newsman she encounters day after day on her lunch hour - Dominic Reece. As their romance blooms, Tish is caught between the events of her old life and what is waiting for her next as her attacker comes back into her life.
I’ll be honest. I was hooked on this book from the beginning and just had to finish it! The reader starts on the fateful night that changed Tish’s life forever. Like many violent events, it’s hard to read. However, the reader then gets to see what Tish has done to protect herself and, more importantly, fall in love. While I did enjoy following Tish, I really liked the opportunities throughout the chapters to be in the mind of the bad guy. It gave me the chance to see his thought process and learn his motivations, as well as be one step ahead of everyone else in the book.
While I enjoyed the majority of the book, I did feel that some parts were a little rushed. For example, after a few glances between Tish and Dom, they finally had a conversation. That said, the conversations were short. They developed a heartfelt attachment beyond sexual attraction to one another out of these meetings. Unfortunately, I needed more detail to get to this point. Additionally, in the end, it seems that the author wanted to wrap up everything with every character but rushed through it. There were a few other scenes in the book that I also thought could be developed more.
Overall, I have to give this book 4 out of 4 stars. The story was engaging and intriguing. I just wanted to continue reading. It also was well edited, but there were a few mistakes that could easily be eliminated with another proofread. That said, I would recommend this to other readers who enjoy a mix of romance and mystery. Luckily, for those who enjoy the book, it appears that the author will be making this into a series!
Before you finish the review, I have to give a few warnings, especially as some of these could put off some individuals. First, this is an erotic novel with explicit themes and writing. Similarly, the main characters participate in kinky and BDSM behaviors. If you don’t want the detail, you’ll have to move on. In addition, there were mentions throughout the book of LGBTQ themes and actions. In fact, the main character’s friends are lesbian. While none of these aspects are at the forefront of the novel, it may turn away some readers and I can only warn you before you start reading.
