[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Ghostly Embrace" by Brenda Hurley.]
Ghostly Embrace by Brenda Hurley is the story about the life, death, and afterlife of Louis, a master carpenter, a gentleman, a romantic at heart and an all-around good guy.
All Louis ever wanted was to love and be loved in return…
Born into a long line of agricultural laborers in the 18th century, Louis makes a name for himself by truly pouring his heart and soul into his carpentry. When he is commissioned to craft a set of picturesque shutters for the well-off Mr. Pennock, his life changes instantly. The moment he set eyes on Sophia, his heart skipped a beat and he knew it was love at first sight. While finishing the work over a long period of time, they grow close and eventually marry, but their bliss is short-lived when an unfortunate event takes his life. Not realizing that his life force has been drained from his physical body, Louis does not go into the light and ends up trapped in limbo, and bound to his craft.
The remainder of the book follows the spiritual life of Louis over more than a century, and his craving for love is apparent throughout. He becomes angry and frustrated often, but the women he meets along the way give him hope and purpose. Being a good person in his physical life carried over into his spiritual life and he finds a way to help the ladies when they need him the most.
I enjoyed the writing style and my favorite parts were when Louis retreated into his own private paradise, it felt serene and genuine.
Unfortunately, many spelling and grammar errors detracted from my enjoyment of the book somewhat, but a decent round of editing can sort that out quickly.
If you are sensitive to subjects like rape, murder, physical abuse, alcoholism, prostitution, relatively graphic sex scenes, possession of evil spirits and ghostly manifestation, I would recommend that you steer clear of this novel. I would also not recommend this book to children or even teenagers, as the graphic nature of sex and violence would not be suitable for them to read.
However, if you are a romantic at heart, this story will delight you, and keep you hooked from beginning to end.
Due to the number of errors I came across, I can unfortunately not give this book a perfect rating, but instead, I am happy to award it 3 out of 4 stars.
