Former Texas gubernatorial candidate Blake Buchanan is ready to make a comeback. Once a shoo-in for the highest political office in the state, Blake was forced to give up his dream to save his wife's threatened reputation and protect his family.

One year later, and it appears a second chance is on the horizon for this charismatic politician. As Blake tries to navigate life and his legal career after an unpleasant divorce, he cannot shake the lure of politics. Persuaded by a genius strategy formulated by his indefatigable former campaign manager to resurrect his career, Blake attempts a political comeback. However, amid the chaos, scandal, and deception that trails his return, Blake must find his equipoise as he figures out what is most important to him in life and love.

The Next Election by Landon Wallace is a fast-paced and enthralling political thriller, with a dash of intrigue, family drama, and romance. The writing was compelling, the dialogue felt natural, and the character development enhanced the storyline beautifully. None of the characters was surplus to requirement, and all were relatable. The author’s legal background and understanding of the nature of bipartisan politics shown through and added some plausibility to the key elements that made up the plot.

One of my favorite characters was Caroline Stone, Blake's colleague and the finest trial lawyer in the state, literally and figuratively. I am all for strong female characters, and Caroline was an embodiment of brains, charisma, class, and confidence. I particularly like how she handled her short-lived dalliance with Blake. She was as savvy as she was astute about the situation from the start, and wasted no time playing coy or in pulling the breaks without unnecessary fanfare. In Blake's words, Caroline was an admirable, strong, and dignified woman, and I could not agree more.

There was hardly anything to dislike about the book. The Next Election is the sequel to The Election, written by the same author. Nevertheless, it can be enjoyed as a standalone. The story picks up from about a year after the events of the first book and included several references to the first book. However, they were weaved in seamlessly and only further enhanced the backstories of the key characters.

The editing was exceptional, which leads me to believe it was done professionally. The Next Election is a spellbinding read that takes you on an electrifying and suspenseful ride from the very first page. Without a doubt, the book is worthy of a 4 out of 4 stars rating. The final pages of the book suggest the possibility of a third installment, which I greatly look forward to. A movie or miniseries adaption would also not be a bad idea as I believe it has that kind of appeal. If you enjoy political thrillers, you will get a kick out of reading this book. Romance readers are also not left out.

I normally shy away from political books, but this sounds like something that I may enjoy. Judging by your review, I believe it will be as enthralling as one of my favorite shows: “Scandal.”

A politician who is making a comeback in politics despite scandals seems quite interesting to read, especially for those who wished to pursue their career in politics.

This sort of reminds of the Netflix show, "House of Cards." Politics somehow always meshes with romance like water and oil.
