[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Broken" by Larry Flemmings.]
Broken by Larry Flemmings is a non-fiction book with plenty of the writer’s advice regarding romance and relationships. He provides valuable insights from his personal life and his failures, suggesting ways to avoid toxic relationships. Throughout the book, the author utilizes Biblical verses to justify his opinions, so this book has a traditional, conservative tone.
Firstly, it is important to mention that the author writes from a man’s perspective, hence his advice is more suitable for men. Flemmings begins by describing his tough childhood, as he grew up without his mother. His father was a very strict individual, which meant that he punished him by beating him for poor behavior. His family issues, as well as his African American background, brought him in a disadvantageous position at the start of his life. Next, he goes over his first day of school, as well as his attraction to his first-grade teacher, who was named Mrs. Jackson. He later talks about forbidden sexual relations according to the Bible, indicating that it is wrong to lust after women. Then, the writer talks about the significance of educating and punishing a child if necessary. The author continues by describing his first wife and his son.
One of the things I liked in this book was that the author invoked vivid emotion to the text by sharing his feelings and thoughts on his life experiences. Additionally, the writer’s advice was very mature and wise, so it can help young men to be more successful in their romantic life by avoiding divorce and heartbreak. What I liked most about this book was that the writer filled this book with Biblical verses that offered encouragement, inspiration, and wisdom to the reader.
On the other hand, I did not like the fact that this book had plenty of grammatical, syntax, and typographical errors, which indicated a lack of professional editing. What I disliked most in this book was its lack of rational structure, which meant that the author did not compile his thoughts coherently, thereby confusing the reader in some parts.
This book is best suited for male Christian readers who like reading books with advice on romance and relationships. Christians will like this book because the writer offers many Biblical insights.
In conclusion, I give this book 2 out of 4 stars. I refused to give it a higher score because of its poor editing and incoherent structure. Nevertheless, the author added emotion and mature advice, so I could not give it a lower score.
