Official Review of “Driving Mr. Dead” by Molly Harper
The two main characters in "Driving Mr. Dead" Amelia (human) and Mr. Sutherland (vampire) are mirror opposites of each other. Amelia is chaotic and definitely a three-dimensional character with lots of emotional baggage she has to sort through. Mr. Sutherland character is OCD and more two-dimensional, the author doesn’t go into his past too much but she does give him hardships that make him interesting enough. Amelia’s thought process is funny but does tend to drag out in long pieces of dialog that I feel detracts from the flow of the story. The dialogs between the characters are funny but slightly immature for their age but that doesn’t seem to detract from the story. The sexual tension flies under the radar a little but their connection emotionally makes for great romance.
Harper direction with the book seemed to be chaos and adventure along with a good dose of comedy and romance. She does great in all these areas. I loved the plot since it kept you laughing from the hopeless if a little over the top scenarios. Following these characters into their next dilemma was entertaining and fun. The romance in some areas left a little to be desired but Harper did well in covering all the areas of connecting and sharing of emotions by the end of the book.
It is all written in the first person. You glimpse what other characters are feeling through how the main character Amelia perceives them. There is a lot of description, in some areas, too much and detracts from the plot and flow of the story. There is just a little too much rambling on the main characters part.
Most of this story takes place in some kind of moving transportation or a hotel which gives the story a moving forward, stop, moving forward, stop, kind of flow that works for the story. If you love romance/fantasy this is a good book to read. I would give it 3 out of 5 on the great scale. It’s entertaining and has enough romance and sexual tension to keep your head in the book until it’s finished.
