A Girl Like You by Gemma Burgess (spoilers)

Post by TJsmama »

"I've discovered the secret to successful singledom. I'm acting like a man. And it's working."

After breaking up with her boyfriend of, well, forever, Abigail Wood must learn how to be single from scratch. Her dating skills are abysmal, and she ricochets from disaster to disaster – until Robert, one of London's most notorious lotharios, agrees to coach her. With his advice, she learns to navigate the bastard-infested waters of the bar scene and practices the art of being bulletproof. The new Abigail is cocky, calm, composed… but what happens when she meets her match?

After 7 and a half years of being with a man that she was no longer in love with, 27 year old Abigail dumps the only boyfriend she's ever had and moves into the house of London's biggest playboy, Robert. No worries, no instalove here - just two intelligent, attractive, successful and very single people sharing a house together. The two have a cordial, "hi" "bye" relationship and we don't see Robert until after Abby's disastrous date - Her first one in over seven years ever. With Robert's guidance, Abby transforms from an awkward and insecure dater who babbles on and on on her dates and scares potential beaus away to a full fledged 'Bastardette' who's cocky, witty, and a man eater. Her journey and transformation was beautiful to read about but what was even more beautiful was watching Abby and Robert's relationship develop and blossom. They don't end up together right away, and that's great because I felt Abby truly needed to experience and slay all the 'dragons' out there to appreciate and recognize her 'prince' (Robert's mother used to tell him '“you have to slay a lot of dragons to get to the princess”).

My only complaint (seeing as how they're only together for around five pages after reading about and rooting for them the entire book) is the lack of an Epilogue. I would have loved to see Abby meeting his family, their future together, and updates on her new career and even what happens to the other couples.
