Review of Paper Cranes
Paper Cranes, by Julie James, is a story about healing. Cassie Caldwell had a perfect life—a wonderful husband, home, and children. It’s the life that she has always wanted, and she couldn’t have foreseen that she would be a widow with two children at the age of 31. A year after her husband’s death, even though Cassie is still nowhere near being fully healed, she is reunited with an old friend from high school. As Cassie continues to heal with Matt by her side, she is oblivious to a secret hidden in Matt’s past that might break her more than she already has been.
The book focused on Cassie and her journey towards healing from the death of her husband. The author made us witness how Cassie went on with her life as a widow, her breakdowns, thoughts, and how she struggled to cope with her situation. The book included the story of how Cassie and her husband met, which contributed to making Cassie’s grief feel more real through the pages of the book.
What I liked the most about this book was Cassie’s personality. She knows her standards, and she is not apologetic for any of them. She is not timid, and she speaks her mind when she deems it necessary. I am very fond of strong female characters, so Cassie really appealed to me. It takes a different kind of strength to be able to cope with such a tragedy. Cassie lost the love of her life, and now she has to raise two children by herself. Additionally, I admired the respect that Matt had for Cassie and her boundaries. Matt never pressured her, and he supported her in her decisions. I loved how Cassie found the courage to grab an opportunity to fall in love again even after such heartbreak.
I didn’t find anything to dislike about the book. Although it is predictable to some degree, it still packed some surprises that readers may not foresee. The author wrote the book comprehensibly, and I would say that it was an easy read. I would recommend this book to readers looking for a story about healing, especially those looking for a story that might give them the strength to go on another day. The book did not have explicit sensual scenes, so readers looking for a spicy romance might have to pass on this one.
This book uplifted and inspired me. I loved everything about it. There were a few errors, but they did not affect my enjoyment of the book. I’m giving this book 4 out of 4 stars for the hope that Cassie’s story gave me.
