Review of The White Coat Effect
In The White Coat Effect, L. B. Wells introduces us to Rory, a medical student born to two stern parents. Though she's been brought up in the modern American world, her rich Jewish culture runs deep in the family. She chose a medical course out of pressure and coaxing from her mother, who informs Rory that unlike her, she did not inherit her good looks, so she had to join a medical school to secure her life’s future.
While taking her usual rounds in the hospital, Rory encounters Amir, a fourth-year resident, and she instantly falls for him. Then they embark on a secret romantic affair. There’s a problem, nonetheless. Relationships between students and residents are prohibited. Furthermore, their cultural backgrounds are incompatible. Having been unlucky in the love department, Rory is not having any of that. Will she choose love, or will she uphold her family’s continued culture?
This intrigue had me feeling like I was watching episodes of a medical series. The plot intertwines a prohibited medical romance with religion, culture, and family loyalty. Sometimes it is the cruel words said to us by people that inspire us to work hard, and so is the case with Rory. Her mother’s continued disapproval of her looks propel Rory to prove her wrong, and she is more than determined to graduate as a medical doctor.
I like the medical jargon included in the work. More often, I find myself agitated by books that have slang of the field under discussion. With this installment, however, I could not put it down. I guess I felt gratified by learning new medical terms and illnesses. I searched the diseases on the internet together with their causes and possible preventative measures. Simply put, the book is fascinating as well as informative.
The story is written in the first-person narrative, and in this case, from Rory’s point of view. There are segments where Rory flashes back her life without warning, often narrating her not-so-good past sexual experiences with men. I often lost track of the story when she did that. I did not like that aspect of the book.
I did not discover any grammatical errors. I will rate it 4 out of 4 stars because though I found a few points of concern, the medical and romance bits, which were the main storylines, remained flawless. Moreover, the exceptional editing of the publication is an added point. I recommend it to enthusiasts of romance novels interwoven with medical happenings and family dynamics.

I actually almost didn't click on the review because of the cover; I thought it looked cliché, but regardless of the cover, I agree that the story sounds surprisingly interesting.photosynthesis19 wrote: ↑18 Nov 2021, 23:22 I'll be honest, the cover of this book made me curious and click on this reviewBut the story sounds a lot more interesting than I expected. Of course, there is the typical romance storyline, but I really like that the book introduces medical terms and diseases. Although I am not a med school student, I am interested in healthcare and the medical system, and having that built into a love story sounds really cool. Thanks for the great review!
