Patrick has secrets that he is not at liberty to share with the DeLous. His reason for moving into the neighborhood and the relationship that he forms with the couple go well beyond the surface. As he gets closer to the couple, and Marie in particular, things start to happen that Marie cannot explain away. Even Marcel marvels at how this man has managed to get his wife to do things that lesser men (and women) have failed to accomplish. Neither Marcel nor Marie are prepared when Patrick’s true identity is revealed and the impact that the revelation has on their relationship is tremendous.
Marcel DeLou has his own secrets. On the surface he is a loving husband devoted to his wife and work. When he met his wife she suffered from terrible migraines and through his medical research he has been able to successfully treat those migraines with a new experimental drug. Marie’s faith in her husband is steadfast and while she does not like all of the poking and prodding that goes with her husband’s medical research, Marcel knows exactly how to distract his wife. Their passion for one another is strong and Marcel has no reason to question her devotion until he starts to notice the effect that Patrick and his family are having on Marie.
Beneath the surface of their pedestrian lives, forces are at work that could lead to the destruction of an entire species. Marie is a pawn in a game that she is not prepared to play. To her astonishment, she finds that people are not who they have always represented themselves to be. Her own existence and experiences have even been called into question as she is forced to confront who she really is and the role that she plays in the survival of her world. As truths are revealed, Marie manages to find true love and while the sexual bonding that takes place fulfills their baser needs, the protection and support of her family and friends are what Marie truly gets her strength from.
This book is full of twists and stories. There is a definite under-story that the reader is not readily made aware of. As the action builds, the truth about the characters is revealed and their role in the survival of their people becomes the primary focus of the story. The love story that unfolds, steeped in passionate and adventurous sex may have been the intended focus of the book based on the introduction but some of the sex scenes are so over the top that they lose some credibility. In the end I was more captivated by the fight between good and evil and the sex was more of a secondary consideration. My rating for this book is 3 out of 4 stars.
