Review of Just One Spark
One night can change your whole life. This is the case in Just One Spark by Brandy Bruce. Jason Garcia is trying to get his life back on track after he got tired of his life living in the suburbs as a computer programmer. He rediscovers his love of cooking and takes a job as a line cook at the 23rd Grille. One night when the staff is celebrating, him and the owner's sister, Carmen, hook up. Jason is shocked and panicked when Carmen tells him that she is pregnant. Jason and Carmen barely know each other or have barely even talked before this encounter. Just One Spark follows Jason's journey throughout Carmen's pregnancy and navigating his new life that he did not see coming.
Even though I loved the storyline, I found myself quite annoyed with the immaturity of Jason. He's a 29-year-old man, but acted like a little kid that needed constant guidance. I understand this was for his character development, but sometimes I found myself wanting to shake him and say "stop being so stupid!" Overall, he became more mature during his experience navigating this unplanned pregnancy.
I loved this storyline because it was such a refreshing and realistic take on the journey of unplanned pregnancy. I especially enjoyed it, because it was entirely in Jason's point of view, which I think is extremely rare for this type of plot. At the beginning of each chapter, there was an inspirational quote that I thought was really appropriate to that character. Sometimes when authors add an inspirational quote at the beginning of chapters, I don’t think they always make sense for the chapter but Bruce chose her quotes very well. I also really enjoyed the family aspect of this book. Both Jason and Carmen are extremely close to their families and friends, which I think helped them get through the situation they found themselves.
I would give Just One Spark 4 out of 4 stars because of the unique storyline and the character development. This book was also extremely well edited, which made for an extremely pleasant read.
I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys women's fiction. It does have some romance in it but that plays a very small role in this book. This book also does have some references to Christianity but it does not play a large role in the book and can be easily overlooked. Also note there are Spanish phrases through the novel, but even if you know no Spanish you can easily read and enjoy this book.
