Guarding his Heart is a Romance book by Serena Pettus. This book is the second installment of the Southern Pride Series and Swallowing his Pride is the first installment of this series. Serena wrote another Paranormal Romance Series called Wolfe Brothers. Seven of her books have been published and they are available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle editions. It's published by Resplendence Publishing.
A horrible attack on Lynn's life leads her to discover two things. The first is that there are shape shifters in this world and the second is that she has landed on the radar of some rogue shifters, hell-bent on cleansing the shifter nation of anyone who wants to sully their lines by mating with humans, and on top of that, she has fallen in love with Jag, a shifter. In his jaguar form, Jag was locked up in prison by humans for most of his adolescent years. He hates humans and doesn’t trust them, but when his prime puts him in charge with Lynn Edward's protection, his jaguar soon recognizes her as his mate.
I read books mostly for entertainment, and so I have read many paranormal stories, and these books have been mostly about vampires and shifters/werewolves. All the authors in this genre have almost the same image about each of these creatures, but the best of them have given a different kick or taste in order to make their stories stand out. The moment I finished this book I realized it could only be summarized in one word "PLAIN".
I always rate my books according to my list of measurements in order to be fair to the authors, and to make it easier for me to clearly state my opinion. Unfortunately, this book didn’t reach high enough for any of my measurements to give it a higher rating. The opening chapter is about the heroine's thoughts of an accident that I didn’t witness. The book starts after the first attack that has introduced the hero to the heroine, and in very brief sentences, it explains what has happened and how the couple has met.
The story's Pace isn’t slow, but the couple's relation ship's progress is somewhat fast for me. I felt like the author was skipping stages of the couple's relationship in order to reach the declarations of love before the story ends. The author's writing style is good; it's very simple and easy to follow. While the length of any story hasn't been a problem for me before, this book's length became one. The authors don’t know that the shorter the story, the less vital information is given. This story is quite short, so the author didn’t have any room to put much needed details that could have made me link better to the characters; therefore, there was no sense of character building whatsoever.
The Plot's mystery is a very important factor to me, yet unfortunately, in this book I knew exactly how the story was going to proceed. The ending was too predictable to avoid so that reason alone took all of the entertainment I get from reading books in the first place.
This book may appeal to readers who are searching for a short and a simple summer read. However, when I come across a Fantasy or a Paranormal book, I expect pure creativity that gives the story a different taste than the rest. I didn’t catch a prominent theme, nor did I remember something specific that I did like about this story.
Starting the book with the first attack that has introduced the couple would have been a better alternative than the original. Furthermore, since this is a romance book, I advise the author to lengthen the story a bit and to avoid rushing the couple's relationship. The author should try and hide the plot's predictability from us, maybe then, the entertainment measurement would overthrow the other categories. Finally, this book is not appropriate for young readers because it contains explicit sexual scenes; I give this book 2 out of 4 stars.
