“Perfect (for them)” by P.J. Dorantes is a short (only 15 pages long) inspirational, romantic story. The book follows Reina Garcia as she leaves her humble upbringing (much to the distain of her father) to attend a prestigious university on a scholarship. Readers get a brief glimpse of her life from the point where she starts college until her graduation. The plot goes into emphasizing her difficulties transitioning from a simple country life to living in a big city, her struggles to find her place among her peers and how she finds love when she least expects it.
I found the writing to be somewhat too sweet and sappy at times but that tends to be the norm with romantic stories. I don't think fans of the genre will find anything to complain about though. The storyline also stays with a G rating (nothing explicit), so parents and teens alike can enjoy this book.
I found the main character Reina to be realistic. She was at the point in life where the transition from teenager to adult happens. She wanted to better herself by attending the university; she knew she could stay where she was in life but could she really be happy with that choice? She was apprehensive and had numerous self-doubts but she was also determined. She had to rely on herself now (and not her parents) to make the right choices for her own life. One quote particularly stands out to illustrate her thought process when she was applying her makeup one morning. “At times she wondered if all of those colorful powders really helped her to showcase her best features, or if they just hid her behind a mask of fake perfection.” Teens and college-age readers will likely see some of Reina in themselves and be inspired to make tough choices to better their own lives.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I couldn’t give “Perfect (for them)” a full four stars based on the amount of grammatical and formatting errors. There were missing quotation marks, overuse of commas and different length paragraph breaks throughout the book. It’s imperative for authors to thoroughly proofread before publishing and errors tend to be more glaring in a book with a minimal word count.
“Perfect (for them)” by P.J. Dorantes was a short and sweet read. Romance fans will find Reina endearing and the length makes for a perfect lunchtime read. I look forward to reading more works by this author.
