Ignited Desire by Marco Lease is an erotic fiction novel that tells the tale of the sexual ups and downs of a married couple, Jake and Jane. The story is about the couple’s communication issues regarding their own needs and the perceived needs of the other party, how they both decide on their own to remedy these issues, and their eventual communication with each other on their relationship and its problems.
Jane feels that her married sex life has become too routine and sex is now a scheduled event. She wants Jake to become more spontaneous and adventurous in bed and goes about trying to figure out a way to change this by consulting with a friend and reading a book about seducing men. Jake, on the other hand, enjoys their scheduled sexual routine and wants things to stay as they are; he cannot figure out why his wife seems so different and insatiable and isn’t really sure how to take it.
I found this book mildly entertaining as far as erotic novels go. There was a fair amount of naughty parts for readers who enjoy the boldness of erotica and there were very few grammatical or spelling errors to be distracted by. It was a quick and easy read.
There were a few things I did not like about this book. First, the fact that the main characters’ names are very similar to each other made it a little difficult to read; at times I had to do a double take to make sure I knew which character was doing the talking. I also thought that the book began and ended rather abruptly. The beginning of the book seemed more like a start of a new chapter mid-novel rather than the start of the actual novel itself. The biggest issue I had with this book is that I feel that maybe the author should tailor his erotic writing style to better fit his target audience: women. While there are many men who enjoy reading erotic novels, the majority of the readers of this genre are women and many of the sex scenes seemed quite vulgar and hastily written, with some poorly chosen adjectives and descriptors. There is also one particular sex scene near the plot climax of the book that I really think some female readers will possibly be turned off by or even upset about, as well as both characters’ handling of the situation.
Overall I would give this book 2 out of 4 stars. I didn’t give it a 1 because there are some readers who may find this book an excellent read. I feel I can’t rate it higher because while grammatically the novel does pretty well, I felt a little like I was reading a first or second draft; it seemed like it needed another edit to liven it up. The story is lacking in depth and quite dull with very little plot; all of the characters are quite stereotypically “primal man” and “sexy woman”. While I personally did not enjoy reading this book, the erotic scenes are very sexual, so for readers of erotica who love that the best, it’s an enjoyable read.
