T. V. Hartwell’s debut novel, The Platinum Triangle, is a unique work of romance that is sprinkled with hints of suspense. It was a fairly quick read of about 300 pages, and makes for great weekend read. This book touches upon many themes such as love, honesty, marriage, and family. In addition to the themes, this story is centralized around idea of relationships. After reading The Platinum Triangle, it made me realize how important honesty is in a relationship, because without honesty, there is no trust.
When Jake Doyle and Amanda Climent meet for the first time in their Game Theory classroom, at the prestigious Stanford University, it is love at first sight. Right then and there, Jake silently swears to her, ¨I am going to marry you one day¨. Six years later and sure enough, Jake and Amanda are excitedly planning out the final touches to their wedding. However, not everyone is happy at the thought of these two lovebirds getting married. From day one, Jake’s mother, Jamie Doyle, has been against her son’s relationship with Amanda Climent. Jake cannot seem to figure out why his mom is so opposed to their marriage. What can be so bad about Amanda?
As much as Jake is excited to finally start calling Amanda his wife, he cannot stop thinking about his best friend, Kirby. However, Kirby is not just Jake’s friend, he is also his secret lover. What initially started as experimentation and curiosity back in high school has metamorphosed into something far more serious. Jake knows that once he marries Amanda, he wants her to be the only lover he has, but does he have enough willpower to end things between himself and Kirby? Or will their secret bromance continue in the dark?
Reading this book was like trying to buy cotton candy at a fair: the beginning is rushed and you have to push through to get into the actual cotton candy line, but you persevere because it been years since you have experienced the sensation of sugar, in the form of a fluffy cloud, dissolving in your mouth. After waiting for what seems like ages, you finally reach the front of the line, but all of the cotton candy is sold out and you walk away feeling empty and incomplete. Like the cotton candy line, The Platinum Triangle was a bit rushed in the beginning and I really had to push myself to keep reading. The reason why I never put this book down was because of its uniqueness. Almost every chapter in the book contained another twist in the story. Unfortunately, I felt like the end of this story was actually the middle of the story. Yes, this book has a cliffhanger ending, but I felt like it ended a bit too abruptly and every single one of my questions were left unanswered.
Like many other books, I had my likes and dislikes. I found the characters in this novel quite hard to relate to, because not everyone comes from billion dollar families like Amanda, and it was hard to look at things from her perspective. At times it reminded me of an episode of Gossip Girl. On the other hand, I liked the uniqueness and the constant twists in the storyline. I appreciated the background descriptions the author included about each character, but sometimes I felt as if I were reading my school’s history book rather than a romantic novel. Overall, I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to readers over the age of eighteen due to some adult situations, such as sexual intimacy.
