I would put Passion Queen By Kevin James in the trashy romance category. I would not call it a novel because it is a very short read. I read this book in about an hour. Now just because it was short does not mean it was an easy read for me. I will explain why below.
The story mainly revolves around a female pop star called Felicity who recently became famous and how she juggles being a celebrity and being hounded by media and public all the time versus her personal love life. The secondary character is her manager who is also Felicity’s friend and is a bisexual and is into threesome. The author tries to explore issues such as threesome, bisexuality and redefining the premises of a “relationship”. Religious constraints were almost thrown in as an after-thought. I say try because it was not done very well.
The various angles that this book tries to explore could have been better achieved if the author took their time to expand and explore each issue deeply. It almost felt like the author was writing a book about a topic that they do not feel very comfortable about.
Based on the theme and story line I got that this is a romance novel. Readers who usually pick up a romance novel want graphic details and this story fails to deliver that. For example when Felicity was drunk and had sex, the author just narrates the part and the only quote about the act was “ It went on for some 17 heavenly minutes”. A few sentences later the chapter ends. I was like really? That’s it? Was sorely disappointed.
The second biggest issue I have with this book is the writing style. It was very inconsistent and sloppy. For example, the first quote in the book starts off by saying that “It is more pedantic than anything else?” This quote is from Felicity describing her celebrity life and although I was surprised to see that kind of description in this kind of story I was not opposed to it. But shortly you get a sentence like this “ yeah, that’s the 1.” And just the inconsistencies bugged me to no end. I am usually not that picky on grammar, but this was just bad. I do not mind authors introducing slang in a book if it fits the character but in this case, this type of language was applied to all character quotes and so the point is not valid.
Speaking of character development, the way that some characters are introduced, in the beginning of the book was interesting. I thought the author would be going somewhere with that, but they do not show up again later and so it makes me wonder what the point was to bring them in? Now the way that the author has divided the book is in 3 parts and this story just covers Part 1. Maybe they may show up in Part II and III who knows?
So for inadequate character development, poor writing style and under developed story line I rate this 1 out of 4 stars. I would not recommend this book to anybody unless the author does a major revamp and some serious editing!
