First Life by Stella Bonanno is a book about a girl, Kat, who is running from her mob boss dad. She ends up with a guy named Mike and his younger brother, Chris, who have parental problems of their own. After developing a relationship with the guys, their pasts collide in a deadly fashion, and they will do anything to protect each other.
This book would be best for individuals who are looking for a quick read, with the story taking place in under 150 pages. Having a simple sentence structure though out the book also helps for a fast read. If you are looking for a story that is more in depth, then this book is probably not for you. Being so short, the story happens very quickly. There is also not a lot of room for development of characters or situations; this may be because the story is told in first person.
The aspects of the book that I enjoyed include the romantic moments and the switch in character point of view. There were many romantic moments in the book, and usually they were very sweet. Around these moments, it was very hard to put the book down. The development of the relationship between Kat and Mike seems very natural and not rushed, even though it happens so quickly. The switch in the character point of view allows the reader to get a better picture of the whole story. It made for a better-rounded story. I think it would have benefited the story to bring in the switching of point of view earlier in the story, instead of waiting until the end.
The aspects of the book that I did not enjoy include the first person perspective, the simple sentence structure, and the ending of the story. The first person perspective was done in a way that seemed to be overly detailed and under detailed at the same time. There were moments in the story where I felt it was not necessary to describe every detail of, for example, what something looked like, but other moments that there should have been more detail of, for example, the background of the characters. The simple sentence structure made the story seem broken. There seemed to be a jumping around and confusion to the flow of the story. While I cannot say what happens at the end of the story, I will just say I was not pleased. There was a slight disconnect as to what happened and what really would have happened in reality in the situation that takes place.
I rate this book a 2 out of 4. This is because while I did not enjoy the book as a whole, it did have some good parts and others may enjoy it more than I did. There were moments when I could not put the book down, and others where I wanted to stop reading the book.
