Alone In My Memories by Dallacey E Green is a gentle romance novel about a couple in post-World War II Philadelphia. The novel follows the internal dilemma of the main character as she struggles, as the title suggests, with her memories of her past.
The novel is narrated by Katherine, a young wife who wakes up in a hospital after a car accident and does not remember the past seven years of her life. She is shocked to learn that within these missing years she has married, had two children, and is expecting another. All of these events have happened with a man that she detests, Myles. Katherine struggles to piece together the clues of the life she returns to once discharged from the hospital in an attempt to figure out how she ended up married to Myles as well as to unravel the big secret that everyone seems to be keeping from her: how she ended up in the accident. The more she finds out about herself, and the events that led up to the car accident, the more frightened she is that she was following in the footsteps of her mostly absent Father, whom she had vowed at a young age to never be like.
Dallacey Green did an excellent job of illustrating the inner turmoil of Katherine. Her thoughts and actions were often heart wrenching, and every emotion she felt, I felt deeply alongside her. At times during the story, I both cried and laughed, and I was eagerly awaiting her piecing together the events of the past. The relationship between Katherine and Myles was slow developing, but this added to the authenticity to her uncertainty regarding their past.
Despite some parts of the novel being a bit predictable, I was pleasantly surprised by some of the twists in the plot. Although, after the slow development of the story, it was unexpected how quickly the novel finished after the climax. I also had a difficult time with placing the story in the correct time period, until it was mentioned that Myles fought during World War II about midway through the story. The subtle hints of decorum and dress given by the author up to that point weren’t clear enough to assign the appropriate era to the novel.
Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The novel was extremely easy to read, and kept me engaged all the way through. It was the perfect novel to read on a rainy Sunday afternoon, and I actually completed it in one sitting. I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys a modest romantic novel, and I greatly look forward to reading more from Ms. Green.
