Official Review: The Layers of Freesia by K.S. Morgan

The Layers of Freesia is a short novel (approximately 100 pages) written by K. S. Morgan. Although it is a quick read, it packs in an entertaining story. You immediately meet Konrad Eberstark, a 34 year old billionaire, and get a glimpse into his history with relationships and the damage caused by an ex-girlfriend. As a result, Konrad is slow to trust and very quick to judge his girlfriends, with each relationship lasting only a few months before his distrust leads to a breakup.
Konrad is certain that women only want him for his money. Determined to avoid the gold-diggers who seem to flock to him, Konrad decides to hide his wealth and play the role of an “average Joe” when he meets quirky Faye Lewis. Faye isn't the prettiest, smartest, or most well-dressed woman Konrad has ever met, but something about her fascinates him, and he pursues a relationship with her, all the while pretending to be a simple bank employee. The relationship progresses well until a lie is told, the truth is twisted, and manipulation and betrayal ensue, threatening everything that Konrad and Faye have built together.
I enjoyed reading the book. I appreciated the author's notes of passage of time, giving a more realistic feeling to Konrad and Faye's relationship. This wasn't love at first sight, and I found the story line to be more realistic because of this. Morgan does a wonderful job of building the characters, so you really get a sense of who they are. I also appreciated that Morgan didn't write Faye's character as a wimp. Although Faye seems to start the novel with self-esteem issues, she develops a backbone later in the novel that had me cheering for her.
I felt that the tipping point of the story seemed a little bit rushed, and I would have appreciated more insight into Konrad's point of view as this critical point unfolded. There was a clear sense of Konrad's struggle with his head vs. his heart, though I would have liked a little more detail into his “ah ha” moment. The final confrontation contained some ideas that perhaps ought to have been explored earlier on in the novel, so that they flowed more clearly; however, Morgan does reflect on some aspects of it later in the novel. That said, the story was still very engaging and enjoyable to read. I give The Layers of Freesia 3 out of 4 stars.
Anyone who enjoys a contemporary romance will enjoy this quick read, and it would especially appeal to anyone who loves reading about the damaged man and the woman who unlocks his cold heart. It is a stand-alone novel with no cliff-hangers, and K. S. Morgan does a wonderful job of wrapping up the story.
