Official Review: High Heels and Train Wrecks (Book 1 Zodiac Romance Series) by Carolyn Reynolds

High Heels and Train wrecks is a light and easy read with the romance focusing on astrology and matching appropriate zodiac signs. This is the first book in the Zodiac Romance Series. The heroine of this book is Hudson Christy. She is what I like to refer to as a hot mess. She is an independent paralegal working in Los Angeles and focused on helping the underprivileged, hanging out with her best friend Mac, and keeping tabs on her somewhat flighty grandmother; Drama. She is disorganized and very headstrong. The beginning of the book lets the reader know that she is suffering from a pretty hard breakup and not looking to meet anyone new. As any good romance would do, Mr. Right of course bumps into her at the wrong time, but in the right place. Ryan Lowell is a typical playboy and Leo. Hudson has met her match, astrologically speaking.

This book is a romance novel and I liked it overall. I’m not an avid follower of astrology, but I know enough to know that I’m a fire sign like Hudson. I liked this because I feel like the author was describing me when she was describing Hudson. Her actions and thoughts were almost identical to how I would have reacted in those situations. The characters are well described and the author keeps them true to their zodiac signs. If you aren’t familiar with astrology, that’s ok. The author describes each sign and personality traits as they are necessary and makes this an easy read. It also made me think a little more about astrology overall.

While I liked this book well enough, there were a few things I didn’t like and I’m including them only as constructive criticisms. The characters were well written, but they didn’t have enough to do. Most of the time Hudson was picking out clothing or worrying if she was going to impress her man. She is a paralegal who likes to help the underprivileged so I would have enjoyed seeing her from that aspect a little more. I also would have liked the story between Hudson and her ex to be explored more. I can’t go into too much detail without giving out spoilers but it seemed lackluster.

The hero of the book wasn’t very likable at first which is a bit of a turnoff. It took a while to warm up to him and I spent half of the novel hoping Hudson would meet someone else. I also noticed there was no large obstacle for the couple to go through to make them see how right they are for each other. There were a few dust ups between them throughout the novel but nothing too exciting. It made me feel like my best friend was giving me a day to day account of her own love life.

These little problems are just my personal insights and weren’t enough to make me drop the rating significantly. I would probably read more in this series especially if I wanted something light and fun. I am giving this book a 3 out of 4 stars. The author definitely knows her subject and the world she created was realistic and just how I would imagine life and love in Los Angeles would be in these modern times. Carolyn Reynolds definitely has caught my interest and I’m looking forward to reading what she comes up with for a Sagittarius Romance.
