Review: The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean

The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean is a love story set in 1833 Britain, a time set in rules and hierarchy and when scandal does not stick to dukes but mars the ladies reputation and controls the rest of their lives.
Sophie Talbot is the youngest of what the ton calls Soiled S Sisters or the Dangerous Daughters. Unlike her sisters who bask in the gossip and the attention whatever scandal they get into with their striking beauty and vibrant personalities, Sophie is the quiet and unnoticeable one. As the sensible and levelheaded of the five Talbot sisters, it was to everyone’s disbelief when Sophie managed to ruin the Talbot’s name beyond repair. This was accomplished by merely insulting her philandering Duke of a brother-in-law publicly in a moment of anger as a protective sister. With this bout of courage, she flees from the world she was thrust into and never wanted to be in and by fate run into scandalous, sinful and utter scoundrel Kingscote, Marquess of Eversley. Thus begun the love story of a simple young woman who is running to her past and a troubled man trapped in his past.
Reading the very first pages immediately hooked me with the book. The author has a gifted way with words and technique as she weaves the story in such a way that the reader feels in the moment and as connected to the characters as one could. I could not put the book down. I don’t think there’s any dull moment in here. The story and the way it was written is simple yet captivating. I enjoyed the banters of the characters especially, wanting them to read aloud as it was funny yet entrancing. It was quite sad when the book ended as I was left with wanting to read more.
As a book in general, I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars as it is not an original plot nor does it have anything special. But as a romance book, I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars as I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It is like an ordinary rock polished with a skillful hand. If you just want an easy and fun read and just want to fall in love with love again, this is definitely a must read!
