I would categorize Sex and the underground city by Laura Roberts in the erotica fiction department. What made this book interesting to read was that the story is told in the first person point of view about a Canadian sex tour guide. In each chapter, the reader becomes a voyeur as “Frankie” Parker takes you on a very seductive tour of what underground Montreal has to offer. The author through her phenomenal writing gives the readers a taste of Montreal culture. I found the book fast paced and a pretty easy read. I finished Frankie’s tour within 24 hours.

Although the reader gets a tour of all things seductive I found that unlike other traditional stories, there is no real plot or climax to this book. Yet, even without this crucial element in a story, I found that I was flipping through the pages to finish the book.

What I really liked was that the Frankie’s character was very well developed. With every interaction, dialogue either as the narrator or with conversations with her clients, the reader gets a just a little more information about their tour guide. She is a strong female lead character unlike any other and she will really make you wonder if there are people like that really out there like her.

After reading this book, it made me wonder if there really was another aspect of Montreal that I am totally clueless to. I have visited Montreal in many occasions for business and have always enjoyed the food and the wine, and have even gone on an architectural tour, although my tour guide didn’t have quite the same menu as Frankie’s. From the menu that Frankie states in the first chapter, I can only assume that the tour the reader gets in the book is known as the “Sin City Tour”.

It is not often where I finish a book, call it an easy read, praise the author and still not like it but this is one of those books. I could find no fault with the author’s writing style or her genre. I found the author was completely comfortable with the topic and was willing to delve into topics where other authors may just gloss over. Yet I can’t help feel like something was missing. Maybe I am a traditional reader who likes her thick plots and climaxes in a good novel. That being said, I do recognize the fact that there is a market and others readers who would love this book. My rating for this book is 3 out of 4 stars!
