L.D. Rose’s romance novel, Releasing the Demons, is the first book in The Order of the Senary series. This book focuses on Blaze Knight and Detective Valerie Medeiros.
Blaze Knight and his brothers are members of The Order of the Senary, a group sworn to protect the human race against vampires. Blaze is still trying to get his life back together after being tortured five years ago by Cyrus Chimola and his gang for seven months until he was rescued by his brothers. He is forced to face his past when Cyrus comes back looking for him. Blaze is determined to find Cyrus first and finish this once and for all but not without some help.
NYPD detective, Valerie Medeiros, is determined to get revenge for her sister’s death by killing every vampire possible. Valerie is investigating a murder of a young girl and all evidence points to Blaze Knight. While trying to prove he is guilty, she not only discovers he is being set up but that he is not like most men. She finds out Blaze and his brothers are half vampire and half human known as hybrids working for the government.
At first, she has a hard time trusting him and doesn’t know if she believes his intentions are the same as hers. She soon realizes she is falling deeply in love with him and now finds her life in constant danger. Is she willing to leave her old life behind and be a part of Blaze’s crazy and dark world?
The author did a great job at developing the characters. I enjoyed how flashbacks into Blaze and Valerie’s past were used to help you understand the struggles they go through from day to day. It made it easy to see why Blaze battled to be the person he was before he was captured and not the guy that ran to drugs to cope with things. It made it easy to see why Valerie hated vampires so much after her sister was killed by one when they were young. It also made it easy to see why she didn’t trust Blaze at first; after all he was half vampire.
I loved that the book constantly had me guessing what was going to happen next. I was not able to predict the outcome of the book in the first chapter like some books I read. I like that it left you guessing how Blaze became a hybrid or what The Order of Senary was. Though, I did wish it would go into more detail of explaining the Order or the process of becoming a hybrid.
Another aspect of the book I enjoyed was how the author connected certain characters to each other. For example, how Valerie knew Blaze’s soon to be sister-in-law, Dr. Veronica Kerr, because she was the doctor that took care of Valerie’s dad before he passed away. Also, that Blaze’s brother, JJ, use to actually be Valerie’s contact with the FBI before he died or so she thought.
Some people like gore but it is not for me and certain parts of this book are definitely gruesome. An example is at the beginning of the book when Blaze is nailed to a cross. His brother comes to rescue him and has to pull nails out of his hands and feet. These gruesome details were hard for me to read especially when it talks about the spikes grinding against the bone. There were only a few sections of the book that were gory so it was not that big of a problem.
I absolutely loved this book. It is a book I will read again and I will definitely be reading the sequels. I could not put it down and was not ready for it to end. I rate Releasing the Demons 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good action-packed fantasy romance novel. This book will keep you up late at night reading to see what will happen next.
