Cassandra Piat’s romantic comedy novel, What’s it gonna be?, focuses on the love life between Lucy and Matt as well as Lucy’s friends Olivia and Vic.

Lucy has been dating Matt for four years and feels it is time for him to pop the question. At the age of twenty-six, she wants a family and feels like her biological clock is ticking and she is running out of time. She is also getting pressure from all of her friends and family to dump him if he doesn’t ask her to marry him soon. Matt on the other hand is scared of commitment but sees himself with a family and kids in five years. Lucy comes to the conclusion that Matt does not love her enough and will never get the courage to ask her so she thinks it is time for them to call it quits. She is then introduced to the very attractive Englishmen, Jake. He has it all, the looks, the muscles, and the charm. She hopes by dating Jake she will move on from Matt and be able to start a new life with Jake.

Lucy’s friend and coworker Olivia is a very independent women and is an over achiever. She is very assertive when it comes to her job but the same cannot be said when it comes to men. Her brother created her an online profile to meet guys. At first, she saw it as a joke until she got a message from Pierre. They soon realize they have a connection but want to meet in person to see if they can take their relationship to the next level. She then finds herself in France meeting Pierre. Lucy is not convinced Pierre is the one for Olivia but Olivia is all in and wants to give him a chance.

Lucy’s other good friend, Vic, has been married to Sam for twelve years and they three kids together. Sam gets a new job that has him working a lot of hours and keeps him away from his family. He has a hard time balancing his work and his home life. All of his coworkers are single and see no problem in having late meetings and taking clients to bars after work. Sam soon gets caught up in that kind of life. He feels trapped and thinks that maybe he got married to young and never really had a chance to live. Vic has to find a way to get Sam back with a little help from Lucy and Jake.

The author did a great job developing the characters. I was able to get a clear picture of each character and their personalities. I loved Lucy’s character most of all. It was easy to connect with her and relate. I loved how messy she was in her personal and professional life and how clumsy she was. At times, I felt like I have been in the exact same situations as her. For example, when she was with Matt at the movies and they ran into his ex-girlfriend. Lucy looked like a hot mess with a big coffee stain on her jeans and a pencil still sticking out of her hair while the ex was dressed perfectly and looked gorgeous.

While the plot and story line were good, I felt that there were a few instances where the story could have been shortened. I found myself just skimming some paragraphs because I was either over it or it was just not interesting. The only reason I kept reading was because I had to know what was going to happen between Lucy and Matt. Also, some of the slang words or phrases used were hard to follow at times but it does not take away from the book.

This is a great book to read while on vacation or while sitting on the beach. It is a light read that is entertaining and funny. I rate What’s it gonna be? 3 out of 4 stars. I am simply rating it a three instead of a four because of the fact that there were times that I just skimmed the book instead of reading it. It was not a book that I had any trouble putting down. It took until at least halfway through the book for me to really get into it. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a light hearted romantic comedy book to read.
