Laney has been alone all her life. Losing both her parents and little brother in a home explosion when she was a child, Laney was left with both mental and physical scars. Never having had a real home and perpetually feeling unwanted has made Laney closed to everyone. The only thing Laney enjoys in life is music. Playing the piano is the only thing she truly loves.

Gavin plays in a band with his brother – so naturally he’s a playboy and womanizer. Commitment is the furthest thing from his mind. So when he meets Laney while she is practicing her piano, he doesn’t expect to be completely mesmerized by this girl. But he is. So much so that when he finds out she is looking for a new place to live, he instantly offers to let her rent a room in his house. When she accepts, Gavin finds himself wanting to know more about this woman, to know what haunts her, to show her there’s more to her than her past.

If Ever I Fall, by Erin Trejo, is a heartfelt, witty, yet steamy and serious, contemporary romance. The chemistry between the characters jumps off the pages at you; the plot develops nicely as well. Right when I thought I was hitting a slow spot, Trejo threw in a nice little twist that kept me hooked until the end. My favorite thing about If Ever I Fall is that the dialect seems so real. Granted, there was a lot of swearing, but I felt a lot of what the characters said would be something I would say to someone.

However, there could have been more detail put into the characters and their surroundings. For example, what Laney and Gavin look like, what Laney’s room looks like; I couldn’t really picture what Gavin or Laney looked like in my mind’s eye. This made it a little harder to relate to the characters. Also, there were a few misplaced words and missing punctuations in a couple different spots of the book.

Despite some lack of detail, I would still highly recommend this book for people that like contemporary romances. The playful banter between characters is enough to make you chuckle out loud; the plot is steady- going and believable. It’s just and all around feel good book. It also should be mentioned that this book does have some explicit content and is not suitable for young children.

I have to give If Ever I Fall a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I gave it three stars instead of four because of the lack of detail in the character descriptions and surroundings. For me, this sets the whole book up and it allows my imagination to picture what the author is putting in place, and I just didn’t get that here, but enjoyed the book none the less.

Thank you so much for the book review. I'm always looking for new books to read. This review gave me a great insight as to what the book is about, without revealing too much. It also gave me advice, as a new writer, on what readers are looking for in a book. Thank you again for the great review.

I appreciate the honest review. It was well rounded, providing a general synopsis of the storyline without giving away anything, but also provided positive and negative insight as to the writing style. Thanks for your review!

Thanks for the review. This kind of sounds like a love at first sight type of romance which I don't generally like but this seems interesting. Great review!

Very well-written review, Swiftmover. I particularly liked that you summarised the book from Gavin's point of view. Many romantic books tend to get a woman as the protagonist.

This book is told from Laneys and Gavins pov. I like that. Its not often you get the inside thoughts of a male in romance
