A Matter of Courage is a romance novel written by Wendy Holley. The novel is told in dual third person POV of Irene Brennan, a woman who is forced to go into hiding from her abusive husband, Rick Brennan, and Trent Daniels, a game warden who agrees to protect Irene while she is hiding. The story also has a few chapters in Rick’s POV, as he tries to find her and his life unravels from his choices. I enjoyed having the three separate POVs because I felt this added to the story-line and suspense.

A Matter of Courage begins with Irene living with Rick, who is a famous baseball player. Rick has been using illegal substances and has become very abusive towards Irene. After acting in self-defense, she flees from her home to her sister, Diane, and her husband, Kevin. Kevin is a state trooper and tries everything to persuade Irene to file charges against Rick. Though Irene is hesitant and fears the law will not protect her, her family is able to convince her to make a statement and they help to create a plan to hide her in Montana with Kevin’s good friend, Trent Daniels.

As a city girl, who does not like camping or roughing it, Irene takes a while adjusting to the small town setting. Trent knows what Irene has been through and tries to help her adjust and gain her trust. Quickly Irene finds her own inner strength with support from Trent and her faith, and she is able to make life changing decisions to save herself. But with Rick continuing to search for her, Irene and Trent cannot find peace together and finally move on until Rick is completely out of Irene’s life.

I rated A Matter of Courage 4 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed the plot of this book and felt the author created a storyline that progressed at a real life pace between Irene and Trent. I also liked how the author was able to create characters that felt real. While Irene struggles to trust herself and those around her, Trent is caring and gives her the space she needs to heal. Another point of the book that I appreciated is that there are very few grammatical and spelling errors. I will admit that in some parts, the storyline was slow and it distracted from the plot; however, I felt it came in short bursts, which is why I rated it 4 stars instead of 3.

I would recommend A Matter of Courage for fans of romance novels. This novel is also based on Irene trying to move on from her abusive husband and return to her faith to find hope. Trent comes from a religious family and finds comfort from them while helping to keep Irene safe. While this is not a typical romance novel that I personally read, I did enjoy the characters, plot, and writing style. Readers should be warned that there are trigger scenes in A Matter of Courage that depict Rick physically assaulting Irene and references to substance abuse.
