The book is the third book of The Mackade Brothers by Nora Roberts
Devin Mackade Sheriff to the town of Antietam always had an eye for Cassandra aka Cassie. Cassie was a beautiful girl living in town of Antietam. Cassie got married to Joe Dolin who turned out to be an abuser and a cheater for a husband. Finally Cassie spoke up against the domestic violence and got a divorce and Joe Dolin in a lockup for good measures.
Devin seeing the woman he loved suffer for 12 years had always watched over her and been a dependable friend. But now since Cassie was free and very vulnerable Devin had to move patiently with her. Cassie soon realises her love for Devin but they yet have to face problem in the form of Joe Dolin.
Joe Dolin is meanwhile planning his escape and finally does escape only to be beaten down by the very angry Devin Mackade.
Nora Roberts has spun their story beautifully and also added a twist in the form of ghosts from the battle that had taken place long ago at Antietam.
