Put a Spell on You by Karen Clarke is a light-hearted, romantic comedy about a 27-year old woman named Josie Goodwin. Josie’s life is currently in chaos. Her boyfriend, Will, gave up a very stable career as an ad executive to take care of donkeys and grow vegetables. Her best friend’s life revolves around her baby, her mother is head over heels in love with a tattooed truck driver, and last but not least, Josie needs to secure a filming location for work or she will lose her job!
That’s not the worst of it though. Her grandmother is an eccentric old woman who told Josie throughout her life that she is a witch and will inherit a book of spells on the eve of her 27th birthday. She will then have the ability to cast 9 spells in 9 days, and then her powers will be gone forever. She will then pass on the book of spells to her granddaughter in the future. Josie does not believe in magic and is sure her grandmother is just nuts. But is she really?
I absolutely loved this book. After casting her spells, the world Josie created ended up being way more than she bargained for. The consequences of her spells were unforeseen, and the results were absolutely hysterical. The dialogue was really funny. Josie got herself into really funny jams, and it was enjoyable to see how she got herself out of them.
This book is classified as a romance, but I wouldn’t put it in that category. Even though Josie does have a boyfriend, there is very little actual romance in the book. The story is more about her journey and growth as a person. I loved her character development. At the beginning of the story, Josie starts off as a slightly selfish person, only thinking about her own needs and desires. As her life goes on, however, she understands the things her friends and family go through on a daily basis, and eventually she realizes what’s really important in life.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I couldn’t put this book down. It is extremely entertaining and humorous. There are many scenes where I laughed out loud and I just wanted to know what happened next. This is a very sweet story. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is in the mood for a quick, light-hearted read.
